A closer look at how the Internet really works - LANrm Technologies ...

It?s tough to imagine a world without the Internet. After all, a lot of us go online today to watch movies, talk with our friends, play games and catch up on current events. But how much do you know about the Internet and exactly how it works? You might be surprised at all you don?t know. The Web site Business Insider recently took a fascinating look at the world of the net, paying particular attention to those little factoids that you should but likely have no idea of.

Facebook is King

First, take a more detailed look at Facebook. You know it?s an incredibly useful site to keep up with your friends and family. But are you aware, too, that Facebook is the dominant player when it comes to online traffic? As reported by the Business Insider story, and data from Hitwise, Facebook accounts for about one in every five Internet page views. That?s impressive. So is the number of members that Facebook reached this past year: According to Business Insider, the social media site now boasts more than 1 billion users.

The Biggest Data Center is Rising in Utah

Business Insider also mentioned that the largest data center in the world is now being built in Utah. The National Security Agency is behind this center, and once the data center is finished, it will store a yottabyte of data. You might not know exactly what a yottabyte is. But it?s big. It equals 1,000 zettabytes or 1 million exabytes, according to Business Insider.

Streaming is on the Rise

Do you stream movies or Tv programs to your TV, computer or tablet? Even if you don?t, the odds are high that your next door neighbor likely does. Streaming has become one of the Internet?s most widely used features. According to the Business Insider story, quoting statistics from Harris Interactive, more than Half of U.S. residents are now using the web to watch TV. Streaming video has become a particularly desired service among the younger customers that are flocking to Web streaming. According to Business Insider, streaming is a major hit among individuals below the age of 35.
