Tips in Making a Week by Week Pregnancy Scrapbook

Scrapbooking is a fun way of keeping memories alive and recording the events throughout one's pregnancy. It's a sort of diary, but with more pictures and heavily accessorized with quotes, comments, sketches, magazine cutouts, ribbons, dried flowers, and other interesting mementos. Some mommies like to create their scrapbooks by hand with a blank album while other more tech-savvy moms like to publish their digital scrapbooks online where family and friends from faraway places can see and comment on what's been posted recently. Whatever medium is chosen, the following tips should help mummies create a week by week pregnancy scrapbook.

Choose an overall color scheme for your layout or album design. Your scrapbook will be made of various objects that look different from each other. The one thing that binds them together will be the scrapbook's themed layout, such as a sepia-toned background with handwritten script for descriptions of images and comments on the border. Don't choose a gender-specific theme unless you're sure of your baby's sex. Also, print out your album's layout if you want a specific design for your background. These suggestions apply to both an actual album and a digital one.

Use a Lomo camera or Instagram to create interesting images. These days an ordinary digital camera seems boring without the additional filters or effects that Lomography or Instagram can provide. Lomography is a popular amateur form of photography that uses low-quality cameras from Holga, Diana or the Austrian Lomo. This sub-cultural genre of photography has been described as spontaneous and candid. Because of the camera's poorly built structure, the photos often come out with slight exposures, faded colors, and blurry images that altogether create a surreal work of art. In comparison, Instagram allows the same spontaneity and artistic freedom as Lomography, but with a more technical bent using smartphones instead of analog cameras.

Scrapbooking materials come in many forms. You don't have to buy ribbons, laces, stencil paper, or Japanese paper to make your album beautiful. Accessories with what you've got on your work table, in your drawers, and in old boxes behind your closet. Your sewing kit or your art deco kit also serves as inspiration for designing your scrapbook. Search for old magazines and cut out images or letters to better express what you feel or think during each week that your pregnancy progresses.

Request copies of your ultrasound images and colorize them to create a montage of your baby's growth. Add photocopies of medical documents from your visits to the doctor. That your baby is healthy and seems to be growing normally inside your tummy is both a source of joy and trepidation as you get nearer to the final week. When you look back at those days when you were barely showing, you'll be amazed at how far you've come to bring another human being into this world and experience the happiness of going through the journey of motherhood once again or for the first time.

Create a photo album or a scrapbook to record your baby's progress through your week by week pregnancy. Check out Ivillage for detailed descriptions of your baby's size, appearance, and physical development each week.

Demi Moore Attends Bikini Boot Camp In Mexico

Demi Moore recently attended a Bikini Boot Camp in Tulum, Mexico which involved a session of being totally covered in mud. The 50 year old actress was spotted on the beach, seated peacefully and covered head to toe in dried clay. I hear it does wonders for the skin!

A source recently said of the actress,

?She?s in a good place. She?s open to experiencing new things.?

Moore joined other swimsuit-clad women in the relaxing retreat, which included massages and other spa treatments to tone and help the body get bikini-ready. Despite all the drama going on with the whole Ashton Kutcher situation, Demi is determined to move on.

What kinds of things do you do to prepare for swimsuit season?

?make a striking conversation piece on any discerning zombie ...

OK, gaming community, could you please grow up a little bit? There?s some new game about fighting zombies called ?Dead Island Riptide? which has come out with a promotional boxed copy that includes a statuette.

A statuette of a bikini-clad woman?s torso, bloodily decapitated and dismembered.

Ugh. Ugly, tasteless, useless crap. Even if it weren?t vilely misogynist, why would anyone want such a hideous and pointless thing? I can only imagine that it?s fuel for fantasies about treating women as dead meat.

Gunmen kill security official south of Yemen's Sanaa

SANAA (Reuters) - Gunmen killed the deputy security chief of Dhamar province, south of the Yemeni capital Sanaa, an interior ministry official said, less than a month after an adviser to the minister of defense was shot dead in Sanaa.

"Two gunmen riding a motor bike shot Brigadier Abdulwahab al-Mushki and killed him immediately," the official said.

On December 25, gunmen and bombers targeted three senior military officers and the transport minister in a series of attacks in the capital.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which is based in Yemen, is seen by U.S. officials as the most dangerous offshoot of the militant network.

Yemen's location next to top oil producer Saudi Arabia and major shipping lanes has made restoring its stability an international priority.

More than 3,500 U.S. Weather Records Smashed in 2012

News reports in the past two weeks have noted that 2012 was the warmest year ever recorded in the U.S. Today we learn that 3,527 monthly weather records were broken in 2012, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The tally exceeds the 3,251 records set in 2011, the previous high. NRDC has just released an interactive map equipped with a slider that can be moved from January to December to reveal where record temperatures, rainfall, snowfall, floods, droughts and wildfires were occurring on any given day. Tables on the map?s Web site also list the specific date, location and weather record for every one of the 3,527 events. Kim Knowlton, senior scientist at NRDC, noted in a prepared statement that the rising incidence of extreme weather ?has awoken communities across the country to the need for preparedness and protection.? Tennessee and Wisconsin lead the list of states that had the highest percentage of reporting stations that logged new heat records, at 36 and 31 percent, respectively. March 2012 was the hottest March on record across the contiguous U.S., and July was the hottest single month ever recorded. Last summer also produced the worst drought in 50 years across the nation?s midsection; 1,300 counties in 29 states declared drought disaster areas. And wildfires burned more than 3.7 million hectares nationwide; the average fire size was 65 hectares, far exceeding the 2001-2010 average of 35 hectares. The NRDC said the rise in extreme weather records should spur state and national efforts to curb carbon dioxide emissions (the driver of climate change) and improve energy efficiency, and should motivate state and local governments to develop thorough emergency management plans. Despite Java update, experts say bugs remain

6 hrs.

Oracle Corp. released an emergency update to its Java software for surfing the Web on Sunday, but security experts said the update fails to protect PCs from attack by hackers intent on committing cyber crimes.

The software maker released the update just days after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security urged PC users to disable the program because of bugs in the software that were being exploited to commit identity theft and other crimes.

Oracle's failure to quickly secure the software means that PCs running Java in their Web?browsers remain vulnerable to attack by criminals seeking to steal credit-card numbers, banking credentials, passwords and commit other types of computer crimes.

Adam Gowdiak, a researcher with Poland's Security Explorations who has discovered several bugs in the software over the past year, said that the update from Oracle leaves unfixed several critical security flaws.

"We don't dare to tell users that it's safe to enable Java again," said Gowdiak.

Some security consultants are advising businesses to remove Java from the browsers of all employees except for those who absolutely need to use the technology for critical business purposes.

HD Moore, chief security officer with Rapid7, a company that helps businesses identify critical security vulnerabilities in their networks, said it could take two years for Oracle to fix all the security bugs that have currently been identified in the version of Java that is used for surfing the Web.

"The safest thing to do at this point is just assume that Java is always going to be vulnerable. Folks don't really need Java on their desktop," Moore said.

An Oracle spokeswoman declined to comment.

Oracle said on its security blog on Sunday that its update fixed two vulnerabilities in the version of Java 7 for Web browsers.

It said that it also switched Java's security settings to "high" by default, making it more difficult for suspicious programs to run on a personal computer without the knowledge of the user.

Java is a computer language that enables programmers to write software utilizing just one set of code that will run on virtually any type of computer, including ones that use Microsoft's Windows, Apple's OS X and Linux, an operating system widely employed by corporations.

One version is installed in Internet browsers to access Web content. Separate versions are installed directly on PCs, server computers and other devices including phones, webcams, and Blu-ray players.

The Department of Homeland Security and computer security experts said on Thursday that hackers figured out how to exploit the bug in a version of Java used with Internet browsers to install malicious software on PCs. That has enabled them to commit crimes from identity theft to making infected computers part of an ad-hoc networks that used to attack websites.

Oracle said that the flaws only affect Java 7, the program's most-recent version, and versions of Java software designed to run on browsers.

Java is so widely used that the software has become a prime target for hackers. Last year, Java surpassed Adobe Systems Inc's Reader software as the most frequently attacked piece of software, according to security software maker Kaspersky Lab.

Java was responsible for 50 percent of all cyberattacks last year in which hackers broke into computers by exploiting software bugs, according to Kaspersky. That was followed by Adobe Reader, which was involved in 28 percent of all incidents. Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer were involved in about 3 percent of incidents, according to the survey.

The Department of Homeland Security said attackers could trick targets into visiting malicious websites that would infect their PCs with software capable of exploiting the bug in Java.

It said an attacker could also infect a legitimate website by uploading malicious software that would infect machines of computer users who trust that site because they have previously visited it without experiencing any problems.

Security experts have been scrutinizing the safety of Java since a similar security scare in August, which prompted some of them to advise using the software only on an as-needed basis.

Meanwhile, Microsoft said on Sunday that would it release an update on Monday to fix a previously disclosed flaw in Internet Explorer versions 6, 7 and 8 that made PCs vulnerable to attacks in which hackers can gain remote control of the machines. Microsoft previously released a temporary fix to prevent such attacks.

AAPL: Bulls Dismiss iPhone Worries; Pondering Downside to $400

Shares of Apple (AAPL) are down $14.86, or almost 3%, at $486.89, as the Street responded to yesterday?s concerns about rumored?cuts in iPhone production with a raft of mostly positive endorsements of the stock.

Today?s positive notes follow a rush of such reports defending the stock yesterday morning.

I?d note there is still quite a range of estimates for both last quarter and this quarter in terms of iPhone sales:

William Power, R.W. Baird: Reiterates an Outperform rating and a $750 price target, writing that as regards a projected 20% drop in iPhone sales, quarter to quarter, this quarter, is ?the front-end loaded nature of new market launches is the bigger issue than slowing demand.? What he means is that the iPhone 5 showed up in countries faster this time around than with the 4S: ?We would note that Apple launched the iPhone 5 in close to 100 markets this CQ4, vs. the iPhone 4S in 50+ a year ago. The 5% sequential iPhone shipment decline from CQ4 to CQ1 a year ago might have been closer to 30% if launch timelines were similar to this year. China alone was a significant driver in CQ1 last year, and will benefit CQ4 this year.? He?s modeling 48.5 million units last quarter, up from his prior 46.7 million-unit-estimate, and cut his March-quarter estimate to 39.5 million from 43.5 million.

Shaw Wu, Sterne Agee: Reiterates a Buy rating and an $840 price target. The company?s December-quarter results were likely in line with the Street, he thinks, at $54.4 billion in revenue and $13.70 per share in profit, based on sales of 47.5 million iPhone units. The demand for the iPhone ?remains robust,? he argues, and ?We believe there is great confusion with press reports of order cuts and weak demand.? In fact, writes Wu, the reports merely point to improved manufacturing yields and Apple shifting suppliers. Wu thinks that improved yield could help gross profit surprise to the upside last quarter: ?We are modeling gross margin of 38.7% vs. expectations of 38.3% and guidance of 36%.? Wu sees Apple giving a stock forecast for this quarter, and he?s modeling $44.4 billion in revenue and $10.99 in EPS. ?We have to admit that this upcoming AAPL earnings call has got to be the trickiest as far as we can remember because near-term stock direction will most likely be entirely driven by investor sentiment.?

Hendi Susanto, Gabelli & Co.: Reiterates a Buy rating on the stock and a $950 present value, projecting revenue last quarter of $54.1 billion and EPS of $12.32 per share, on sales of 43.7 million iPhones and 26 million iPads, including 6 million of the iPad mini, while noting that the iPhone count is consistent with ?higher supply chain capacity and wider distribution channels.? Susanto does not provide estimates for the current quarter, however. ?AAPL shares are trading at 5.5x and 11.4x our FY 2013 EBITDA and EPS estimates of $65 billion and $48.00, respectively. We calculate a FY2013 PMV of $950 per share based on our 14x forward P/E plus cash.?

Peter Misek, Jefferies & Co.: Reiterates a Buy rating on the stock and an $800 price target. Misek is modeling 53 million iPhones sold last quarter, and revenue of $59.6 billion and EPS of $15.50. He thinks this quarter?s outlook from the company may end up being ?slightly above consensus? despite Apple?s legendary conservatism in forecasting. That might mean an implicit forecast for 40 million or more iPhones this quarter. Misek actually cut his March-quarter estimate from 48 million units to 44 million units, in part because rumors about another iPhone refresh this year could stall some sales. But he thinks the discussion of production cuts missed the mark: ?As word of the earlier production schedule starts to spread, we believe we could see a slight slowing of demand CQ1 in anticipation of the new product launch and Apple will likely start curtailing channel inventory. Therefore we tweak down our CQ1 iPhone shipment estimate from 48M to 44M, which is still well above widespread fears of shipments in the mid-30Ms. These fears are based on large CQ1 component order declines, but we believe the primary drivers are: 1) an assembly bottleneck caused component inventories to rise in CQ4; 2) new iPhone builds starting in March; 3) demand being in line to slightly below optimistic expectations. Our checks indicate that CQ1 iPhone builds are ~50M.?

NY passes big gun law ? first since Newtown

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed what many consider to be the toughest gun control legislation in the country, expanding an existing assault weapons ban and limiting gun magazine capacity to seven rounds. NBC's Ron Allen reports.

By Becky Bratu and Pete Williams, NBC News

New York lawmakers on Tuesday approved the toughest gun control law in the nation, expanding the state's existing assault weapons ban and addressing gun ownership by those with mental illnesses in the first major legislative action in response to the Newtown, Conn., school massacre.

The measure passed the state Assembly 104-43 after passing the state Senate 43-18 Monday.?Gov. Andrew Cuomo quickly signed the legislation on Tuesday.

"This unfortunately required tragedies and loss of life to actually spur the political process to action," Cuomo said in remarks minutes before signing the bill.

"This will be the toughest gun control package in the nation," Sen. Jeffrey Klein, leader of the Independent Democratic Conference that shares majority control with Republican senators, had told The Associated Press. "All in all, it is a comprehensive, balanced approach that will save lives."

In a statement Tuesday, the National Rifle Association said it was "outraged" and called New York's gun control bill "draconian."

The proposal will include universal background checks, an assault weapons ban, aggressive prosecution of existing laws, and a high capacity magazine ban. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

The vote came as lawmakers in other states as well as the federal government wrestle with how to reduce gun violence after a series of mass shootings.

Obama to release gun proposal as early as Wednesday

President Barack Obama is set to unveil his own proposals -- based on recommendations from Vice President Joe Biden's gun task force -- on Wednesday.?He is expected to focus on both legislative measures and steps that could be taken through executive action.

These steps could include cracking down on people who lie on background checks and focusing on improving school safety and mental health care.?A federal assault weapons ban would require approval from Congress.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg applauded the state's bipartisan cooperation in a statement Tuesday, and suggested that it "sets an example for Washington to follow."

"The responsible and comprehensive gun reform bills the governor signed into law today will help keep guns away from criminals and others who are already prohibited from purchasing them," Bloomberg said.

Cuomo, who had called for an overhaul of gun laws in New York in his State of the State address last week, defended the provisions of the law.

"Seven bullets in a gun, why? Because the high-capacity magazines that give you the capacity to kill a large number of human beings in a very short period of time is nonsensical to a civil society," Cuomo said, according to Reuters.

Called the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, New York's law:

  • Bans possession of any high-capacity magazines regardless of when they were made or sold. Only clips able to hold up to seven rounds can be sold in the state. Clips able to hold seven to 10 rounds can be possessed, but cannot be loaded with more than seven rounds.?If an owner is found to have eight or more bullets in a magazine, he or she could face a misdemeanor charge.
  • Requires ammunition dealers to do background checks, similar to those for gun buyers. Dealers are required to report all sales, including amounts, to the state. Internet sales of ammunition are allowed, but the ammunition will have to be shipped to a licensed dealer in New York state for pickup.
  • Requires creation of a registry of assault weapons. Those New Yorkers who already own such weapons would be required to register their guns with the state.
  • Requires any therapist who believes a mental health patient made a credible threat of harming others to report the threat to a mental health director, who would then have to report serious threats to the state Department of Criminal Justice Services. A patient's gun could be taken from him or her, as well.
  • Stipulates that stolen guns should be reported within 24 hours.
  • Tightens the state's description of an "assault" weapon. Previous state law defined an assault weapon as having two "military rifle" features, but the new law reduces that specification to just one feature
  • Requires background checks for all gun sales, including by private dealers -- except for sales to members of the seller's immediate family.

One of the most controversial elements of the bill is the requirement on providers of mental health services.

"People who are mentally ill should not have access to guns, that's common sense," Cuomo said, according to Reuters. "That's probably the hallmark of this bill, coming up with a system that allows for mental-health screens."

Critics are arguing that the provision is unprecedented and draconian, but it is neither, said Art Caplan,?head of the Division of Medical Ethics at NYU Langone Medical Center and an NBCNews.com contributor.

"For decades mental health workers have had an ethical obligation to report those they think pose a clear and present danger to others to the police and to the person who has been threatened," Caplan said. "Their codes of ethics require them to do so. The new law in New York now makes that reporting a legal duty and gives the therapist a clear set of directions as to how to report and to whom."

In a statement, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. thanked legislators and said the bill will "provide law enforcement with stronger tools to protect our communities from gun violence, including provisions that better enable us to combat gun trafficking and violent gangs, and others that close the state gun show loophole and regulate large-quantity sales of ammunition and firearms."

Critics of the proposal had accused lawmakers of playing politics with citizens' rights and hundreds of gun manufacturer jobs.

"We haven't saved any lives tonight, except one: the political life of a? governor who wants to be president," Republican Sen. Greg Ball, who represents part of? the Hudson Valley, said after the Senate vote on Monday, according to the AP. "We have taken an entire category of firearms that are currently legal that are in the homes of law-abiding, tax paying citizens. ... We are now turning those law-abiding citizens into criminals."

Assemblyman Marc Butler, a Republican, represents the upstate district where gun-maker Remington Arms Co., which employs 1,000 workers, is based. He called the closed-door meetings by Senate Republicans and the Democratic majority of the Assembly "politics at its worst."

Remington builds Bushmaster rifles in Illion, N.Y.?Bushmaster semi-automatic rifles were used in the Newtown shooting and in the killing of two firefighters in Webster, N.Y.

The NRA expressed skepticism about the new law in a statement Tuesday: "While lawmakers could have taken a step toward strengthening mental health reporting and focusing on criminals, they opted for trampling the rights of law-abiding gun owners in New York, and they did it under a veil of secrecy in the dark of night."

"This legislation is not about hunters, sportsmen, or legal owners who use their guns appropriately," Cuomo said. "It is about reducing gun violence and making New York a safer place to live."

Legislators in other states also are moving forward with gun control legislation.

In New Jersey, one of 18 new gun bills submitted to the legislature would require gun buyers to submit to a psychological evaluation. A bill requiring gun owners to register annually, and another requiring all guns to be kept in lock boxes when not in use may be introduced in California. In Connecticut, state Sen. Beth Bye wants to limit access to assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and require that firearms be registered by model and serial number.

Pot Smokers Might Not Turn Into Dopes After All

marijuana cigarette burning in an ash tray Getting high on a regular basis as a teenager has been said to lower your IQ ? but the truth may not be so simple. Image: Flickr/prensa420

Cannabis rots your brain ? or does it? Last year, a paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggested that people who used cannabis heavily as teenagers saw their IQs fall by middle age. But a study published today ? also in PNAS ? says that factors unrelated to cannabis use are to blame for the effect. Nature explores the competing claims.

What other factors might cause the decline in IQ?
Ole R?geberg, a labor economist at the Ragnar Frisch Centre for Economic Research in Oslo and the author of the latest paper, ran simulations which showed that confounding factors associated with socioeconomic status could explain the earlier result. For example, poorer people have reduced access to schooling, irrespective of cannabis use.

Is this a case of correlation versus causation?
Possibly. The data used in the original paper came from the Dunedin Study, a research project in which a group of slightly more than 1,000 people born in New Zealand in 1972?73 have been tracked from birth to age 38 and beyond. As with all such birth-cohort epidemiological studies (also called longitudinal studies), there is a risk of inferring causal links from observed associations between one factor and another.

Past research on the Dunedin cohort shows that individuals from backgrounds with low socioeconomic status are more likely than others to begin smoking cannabis during adolescence, and are more likely to progress from use to dependence. R?geberg says that these effects, combined with reduced access to schooling, can generate a correlation between cannabis use and IQ change.

According to R?geberg, people with low socioeconomic status are, on average, likely to show declining IQ as they age and gradually self-select or are sorted into less cognitively demanding arenas. For example, they are less likely than people with high socioeconomic status to attend university, and more likely to take manual jobs.

Do other studies show a drop in IQ with cannabis use?
R?geberg cites three studies in which cannabis use is not associated with declining IQ. He says that these studies show clear reductions in IQ for the heaviest smokers, but these are not permanent, and people who have stopped smoking heavily show no decline.

What do the original paper's authors make of R?geberg's analysis?
Madeline Meier, a psychologist at the Duke Transdisciplinary Prevention Research Center in Durham, North Carolina, who co-wrote the original paper with her colleagues, says that R?geberg's ideas are interesting. However, she points out that the authors of the first PNAS paper restricted their analysis to individuals in middle-class families and those with low or high socioeconomic status. The outcome suggests that the decline in IQ cannot be attributed to socioeconomic factors alone.

In their original analysis, Meier says, she and her colleagues controlled for socioeconomic status and found that in all socioeconomic categories, the IQs of children who were not heavy users remained unchanged from adolescence to adulthood. Therefore, she says, socioeconomic status does not influence IQ decline.

So who is right?
It is hard to say. Both analyses study the same data set in different ways, and each has merits.

Budget iPhone to feature hybrid plastic/metal design, due later this year

3gs up close

Last week, DigiTimes released a report, claiming that its sources had seen prototypes of a low-cost iPhone floating around Apple?s supply chain. Both The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg corroborated the story via their own independent informants.

Today, DigiTimes offers up a few more details about the fabled handset, claiming that Apple is toying with both an all plastic and a hybrid plastic/metal chassis for the cheaper handset, as well as a special ?see-through? design. More details after the fold?

From DigiTimes? report:

?Apple?s rumored entry-level iPhone reportedly may adopt plastic for its chassis instead of reinforced glass or unibody metal as in the company?s standard iPhone models, to save cost, according to sources from the upstream supply chain?

?other rumors are circulating that the entry-level iPhone will adopt a chassis mixed with plastic and metal, with the internal metal parts being able to be seen from outside through special design, the sources noted.?

The publication adds that?its sources say the related upstream components for the low-end iPhone are currently going through validation, and the handset could hit the market in the second half of 2013. This timeframe, of course, jives with previous reports.

It?s worth noting that while DigiTimes has a fairly hit-or-miss reputation in Apple rumors, it nailed the 4th-gen iPad and iPad mini last year. And this particular report is backed by other, more reputable publications. The point is, there?s an awful lot of smoke.

But is there a fire? A lot of people seem to think so ? especially given recent talk that Apple has been seeing weaker-than-expected iPhone 5 demand. Industry watchers feel like a low-end iPhone would give the smartphone line an inroad into emerging markets.

Me? I think there?s too much supply chain talk about this device for it not to be real. But will we see it this year? I don?t know. This special see-through design sounds interesting though. Maybe Apple has built/is building something completely different this time.

What do you think?

Encoding Concepts in the Brain, Primitive Meteorites and Scientific American Partnerships

It's often surprising to me how profound insights can arise from simple questions. Here's one: How does the brain capture a single concept? Naturally, our minds make use of networks of neurons?but are they sparse or distributed over large populations of cells? Researchers are exploring and debating that question and will likely be doing so for some time.

There is now evidence that each of us has sets of ?concept cells? that know all the 10,000 or so concepts that a typical person remembers. As the cover story, ?Brain Cells for Grandmother,? by neuroscientists Rodrigo Quian Quiroga, Itzhak Fried and Christof Koch, explains, these groups of neurons not only recognize an image of, say, your grandmother, they also react to her written name and to things that are closely related to her. The concept cells appear to link perception to memory, give representation of meaningful concepts and form the building blocks of memory. Turn to page 30 for the article.

A different kind of tangible connection is at work in ?Secrets of Primitive Meteorites,? by geochemist Alan E. Rubin, starting on page 36. Unlike astronomers, who can only see celestial bodies from a great distance, Rubin says he derives emotional and intellectual satisfaction from being able to hold and probe the objects of his research: ancient asteroidal fragments called chondrites. These space rocks bring with them to Earth clues about their origins in the solar system, where our concept cells can properly appreciate them.

Innovation at Work

As everybody knows, the innovations that come from research do not occur in a vacuum. Likewise, Scientific American enjoys numerous partnerships, which help us connect to new audiences about science. I thought I would highlight three kickoffs for you.

First, this issue marks the start of several upcoming collaborations with the World Economic Forum. In Graphic Science, on page 80, you will see the thought-provoking results of its latest Global Risks Report. And on page 13, Michael Fertik of Reputation.com writes in our Forum column about how online personalization has a dark side: it has created an Internet that differs for rich and poor. As this issue arrives, I will be at the annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, to run some sessions and gather further information.

Second, I attended the ribbon cutting for the new, $64-million Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, which joins the nearby Scripps Florida on the Florida Atlantic University campus to form a new center for science in the Sunshine State.

Third, later in January begins the 2013 Google Science Fair, which includes the competition for the Scientific American?sponsored $50,000 Science in Action Award. As I have done for the past two years, I will serve as a judge for this global competition for students ages 13 through 18. ?M.D.

Woman at center of Berlusconi trial in court

MILAN (AP) ? The Moroccan woman at the center of ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi's sex-for-hire trial has arrived in court to testify as a witness for the first time.

Karima el-Mahroug was ordered by the court to appear Monday to testify after failing to show on two previous dates, reportedly because she was in Mexico on vacation. She has been called as a defense witness.

Berlusconi is accused of paying for sex with el-Mahroug, better known as Ruby, when she was 17, and then trying to cover it up. Both deny sexual contact.

El-Mahroug is the last witness due to testify, meaning that a verdict could come before the Feb. 24-25 elections in which Berlusconi is heading a center-right coalition.

Berlusconi's defense is expected to request a suspension in the trial for Italy's electoral campaign.

We Meet Magatte Wade, one of Forbes' '20 Youngest Power Women ...

Serial entrepreneur and female hero Magatte WadeThe NextWomen Africa Theme.?

We are really honoured to bring you an exclusive interview with Magatte Wade, one of Forbes magazine's ?20 Youngest Power Women of Africa.?

Magatte was born in Senegal, educated in France, and started her entrepreneurial career in the U.S. Her first company, Adina World Beverages, based on indigenous Senegalese beverage recipes, became one of the most widely distributed U.S. brands started by an African entrepreneur.

Her second company, Tiossan, offers skin care products based on indigenous Senegalese recipes online and at high-end boutiques.

Magatte was also named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum at Davos and is frequent speaker at business conferences and college campuses, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth, MIT, Wharton and Babson.

Magatte writes for The Guardian, The Huffington Post, and Barron?s. She has been featured on BBC, CNN, FoxBusiness and The New York Times, amongst others.

She is a mentor for the MIT Legatum Center for Entrepreneurship and Development.

TNW:?Within five years of launching, your first company, Adina World Beat Beverages, had raised over $30 million in venture capital from institutional investors and is now the most widely distributed U.S. consumer brand founded by an African entrepreneur. In the saturated soft drinks market, how did you achieve such buy-in from the investors and go on to achieve this incredible growth?

MW: Adina?took off because investors and buyers both found the combination of Magatte Wade and Greg Steltenpohl to be a credible combination.? I brought authentic indigenous beverage recipes and Senegalese sourcing, Greg had co-led Odwalla to tremendous beverage industry success.? The cultural creative demographic (basically the Whole Foods demographic) was enthusiastic about an all natural and organic Fair Trade brand founded by an African woman entrepreneur.

TNW:?Tell us about stepping down as the CEO of Adina to launch your new company, Tiossana. What prompted that decision? What is the philosophy behind Tiossan?

MW: While?Adina?was highly successful at raising capital, the flip side of that success is that the commitment to African branding and sourcing was steadily diluted.? I left?Adina?because the organization was no longer as focused on Africa as I wanted it to be.?

Tiossan is committed to creating the first high-end African skin care company.? Our recipes are based on indigenous Senegalese recipes.? Our branding is designed to evoke a "contemporary Africa" styling that is clearly differentiated from most existing African brands, which are typically based on safari, tribal, or "pity" approaches to Africa.?

50% of our profits go towards the creation of innovative schools in Africa designed to develop the creative genius of Africa.?

I am very careful with respect to outside investors and partners to ensure that they share my commitment to building an authentically African brand.? We do not yet have the capital required to manufacture in Africa (in most cases we will have to develop entire supply chains from scratch), but all of our production methods are designed to be transferred to Africa as soon as we have the capital required to do so.

TNW:?Tell us a little about the startup scene in Senegal. Is entrepreneurialism on the rise? What kinds of new businesses are emerging?

MW: Senegalese are extremely entrepreneurial:? To take one example, most of the black street sellers in NYC, Paris, and Milan are Senegalese entrepreneurs.? Within Senegal, however, government obstacles make it very difficult to create a legal business.? Senegal is one of the most difficult countries in the world in which to fire an employee, for instance.? And as I often point out, "If I can't fire you, I can't hire you."? The poor business environment in Senegal impacts all entrepreneurs, male and female, equally.? It is largely the reason why Senegal is poor (almost all African countries are similarly over-regulated, which is why they are poor).?

Thus despite the highly entrepreneurial nature of the Senegalese themselves, within Senegal almost all entrepreneurship remains in the informal economy, without the protection of the law.?

While I have respect for the small businesses of Senegal, the tax and regulatory burden results in a situation in which very few of them ever scale to become substantial employers.

TNW:?What are the particular challenges faced by women looking to start their own businesses in Senegal? Are these reflected across Africa as a whole? Are families and communities generally supportive of female entrepreneurs?

MW: With regard to being a woman, Senegal is actually quite respectful of powerful women.? There are some uneducated Senegalese who are not as supportive of women in leadership positions, but compared to most developing nations Senegalese culture is fairly supportive of women.?

I had many strong female role models growing up, and a forceful woman can make her way throughout Senegalese society without much difficulty.? There are other African cultures that are not nearly as supportive of women.

The African family does present a challenge, though again it is a challenge for both male and female entrepreneurs.? In many African cultures, Senegal included, entrepreneurs typically have a large extended family based on a tradition of gifts, celebrations, and mutual aid.? But every successful entrepreneur must invest most profits back into the company in order to grow.? The only way that Africa will ever have a thriving business sector led by Africans is if some of us use our capital to grow our companies.?I know of many African entrepreneurs who struggle with the constant demands and expectations of their extended families, which can include hundreds of people.?In part this is understandable due to the poverty of Africa, but if African entrepreneurs do not grow their capital, the continent will constantly be managed by outsiders who do have capital.

TNW:?Which African startups do you really admire and why?

MW: The African telecom sector has obviously been very successful, and the most successful of the African telecom entrepreneurs is Mo Ibrahim.? While I certainly respect him as an entrepreneur, his most visionary achievement has been the Mo Ibrahim prize, one of the most visionary philanthropic gifts anyone on earth has ever created.? African's single greatest problem is arguably the leaders of our countries, and the fact that Ibrahim created a prize to recognize African leaders who stepped down has been a striking public recognition of the problem.? Ibrahim exemplifies moral leadership as much as philanthropic leadership. ?

Although not everyone realizes that he is an African entrepreneur, Akon's achievements are extraordinary.? Akon is a Senegalese-American entrepreneur who not only has a successful music career of his own, but who has been even more successful as a producer.? Few realize that Akon discovered and produced Lady Gaga, who went on to make more money for Akon than he did himself.?

I see the essence of entrepreneurial genius to be identifying value before others do, and Akon's insight in picking Lady Gaga early is but one example of his brilliant aptitude for identifying value before others do. ?

Finally, to take a controversial example, Paul Kagame, the president of Rwanda, may be one of the most brilliant entrepreneurs in Africa.? Although he is a political leader rather than a traditional entrepreneur, as a recent book Rwanda, Inc. points out, Rwanda is being led as a corporation.? It has rapidly become one of the most business friendly countries in Africa and has one of the highest rates of economic growth.? Kagame is enabling entrepreneurs in Africa more rapidly than is any other leader.? The big question in his case is whether he will step down when it is time for him to do so.? Will he cap off his achievements by earning a Mo Ibrahim prize?

TNW:?What could Silicon Valley, Paris and Dakar learn from each other in the way they do business?

MW: Sadly, while there are many brilliant French entrepreneurs, they usually leave Paris as fast as they can, usually to Britain or the U.S.? Silicon Valley really is the center of the world for entrepreneurs, and rightly so.? One of the best things about Silicon Valley, which Dakar needs to understand, is that often great entrepreneurs are constantly learning how to "fail faster."? Silicon Valley supports a risk-taking culture in which entrepreneurs are constantly trying new strategies - and sometimes failing.? Dakar is still too dominated by "hippo culture" in which business leaders are expected to be boring, cautious, and conventional.? The Senegalese themselves are extremely creative - we need to integrate creativity and business much more than we've done in the past. ?

Silicon Valley could learn a great deal of humanity from Dakar.? As much as I admire Silicon Valley, I find that geek culture can sometimes be remarkably neglectful of human needs and human dignity.?

People in Silicon Valley sometimes believe that more technology will solve everything.? I don't believe that is true.? I find that when I've been in the U.S. for awhile I miss my people and my culture, where we still have a connection to each other and a mutual respect that is increasingly disappearing in the West in general, and sometimes most rapidly among the geekiest.

TNW:?As innovators, do you believe that entrepreneurs have a heightened environmental and social responsibility? Which global issues would you like to see entrepreneurs tackle in the next five or ten years?

MW: I am driven first and foremost by a sense of social responsibility, and my most urgent goal is to create jobs back home so that people don't die.? Every year thousands of our most ambitious and talented young people die as they try to cross the Atlantic in small fishing boats in an attempt to get to Europe.? There are entire villages in which all of the young men are gone, most lost at sea.? It breaks my heart more than you can imagine. ?

While I respect the fact that there is a growing movement in the West in support of socially responsible business, sometimes I become impatient with the fact that they rarely focus on the fundamental fact that millions of people can be saved simply by creating jobs in developing nations.?

To take but one example, while I personally love to eat locally grown food, it strikes me as a sense of misplaced priorities for young people to regard "local food" as a significant moral cause when millions of people are dying.?

Moreover, if Africa is going to become prosperous, it will only become prosperous by exporting products to the developed world.? Thus I'd like to see a much stronger movement devoted to purchasing African products as a path to creating African prosperity.

TNW:?Do you have any role models or mentors?

MW: Steve Jobs is very much a role model - I love the fact that he was committed to his vision for Apple products even though there was no market research supporting that vision and almost everyone thought he was crazy.? My primary mentors are my husband, who is deeply committed to me and my vision, and my spiritual guide in Senegal, who also continues to support me in staying true to my vision.

TNW:?Is there anything we haven?t asked you, but you?d like to share with our readers?

MW: Try googling "contemporary Asia" in images and look at the quality and diversity of images you discover.? Then google "contemporary Africa" and compare the quality and diversity of images.? Asian artists, designers, and entrepreneurs have made tremendous progress in the past several decades in blending some of the most exciting aspects of Asian culture with contemporary themes of modernity.?

In order for Africans to be respected, we need to become leaders in the mainstream of global culture.? We need to co-create an image of "contemporary Africa" that is just as exciting and diverse as is "contemporary Asia" in art, fashion, architecture, cuisine, design, etc.? As long as the west thinks of us as poor, suffering people in need of their constant help, we will never be perceived as proud peers in the co-creation of the best of culture.? Every westerner who sees Africans primarily as object of pity needs to stop for a moment and reconsider just how demeaning such a viewpoint really is.?

And once they've become enlightened to the fact that we Africans are creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs, they need to get busy co-creating with us - and purchasing the best of our products!!!

Teen Died After Drinking Home-Distilled Spirits | Stuff.co.nz

An alcohol watchdog is warning of the risks of drinking home-distilled spirits following the death of an Auckland teenager.

Tyson Devon, 18, was drinking homebrewed spirits with friends at a birthday party in Rosehill, South Auckland, on Saturday afternoon when he passed out and later died.

His death has been referred to the coroner.

Alcohol Healthwatch director Rebecca Williams said drinking home-distilled spirits was fraught with risk.

"The trouble with the spirits is you don't know the alcohol content."

Brewing spirits was a huge risk to drinkers, which had been highlighted overseas, she said.

In the most recent case Liam Davies, 19, suffered methanol poisoning after drinking at a bar on the island of Lombok, near Bali, on New Year's Eve.?

The Taranaki-born teenager was taken to a local hospital for treatment and then flown to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth where he died.

Methanol is a toxic chemical sometimes added to drinks to make them more alcoholic.

The effects of methanol poisoning can range from vomiting to liver failure and, in extreme cases, death.?

A coroner also warned of the dangers of homebrewed spirits in February 2011.

Otago-Southland coroner David Crerar questioned the availability of homebrewed spirits in Invercargill following the death of Stella Tuhakaraina.

She had purchased a lemonade bottle of homebrew for $20 in the hours before her death.

The 20-year-old died instantly from severe head injuries when her car slammed into a power pole on a Southland highway in 2010.?

However, an Auckland brewer said home-distilled spirits were safe, it was the quantity consumed that was dangerous

Brewers Coop manager Bryan Livingstone said most customers were over 40, rather than teenagers out to get drunk.

It was more likely the amount consumed that caused the teenager's death, rather than the actual home-distilled spirits, he said.

"I'm pretty confident it wouldn't be the quality of alcohol but the quantity consumed."

It is illegal to sell home-distilled liquor, but you can brew it for your own consumption at home.

Distillers can insert a small tube into the spirit kit, which accurately measures how strong the spirits are, he said.

Tyson passed out after drinking during the afternoon and his friends put him in the recovery position.

His friends checked on him shortly before 6.30pm and found he was not breathing.

A St John ambulance spokesperson said staff found Devon in cardiac arrest and despite attempts to resuscitate him he died at the scene.

Senior Sergeant Spencer Matthews said he could not speculate on the cause of death as the matter had been referred to the coroner.

However, he said it did provide a reminder to be careful of alcohol.

"Don't abuse alcohol and take care of your mates."

If Shas is racist Israel is racist....

    And Shas is racist.

Here's Kobi Niv in Ha'aretz. No, hold on a sec. Check out this post and then read on:

Waves of righteous indignation from the stratosphere of Israeli enlightenment were heaped on Shas' innocent election broadcast against fake conversions, which was not just declared benighted and racist, but even Nazi-like, heaven forbid. Why? What was in that video that so incensed the enlightened ones?

All that it showed was a short, not particularly handsome guy of North African origin under the wedding canopy with a beautiful, tall, blonde Russian woman who suddenly discovers that his intended is not Jewish and that her conversion was not done according to Jewish law. True, once again the Mizrahi is portrayed as inferior and stupid, and the Ashkenazi as tall and beautiful, but so what? How does that differ from the usual Israeli racism? What was all the fuss about? What racism did the enlightened ones see here? What Nazism?

Perhaps the illuminati saw racism against Russians, Ashkenazim, one of their own? Perhaps they felt that the Russians were presented as too tall and too attractive, or as not Jewish enough? It's possible. But why is presenting Russian immigrants as tall and not necessarily Jewish worse or more racist than presenting Mizrahim as short and not necessarily bright? What's the problem here, really?

It seems that what really sparked the precious dears' outrage was the question the brown groom asked his white bride: "What, you're not Jewish?" This question, this careful examination of the blonde's pedigree, was the straw that broke the progressive camel's back. What would we say, the annointed ones cried, if in any country - some of the real sticklers hinted grossly at Nazi Germany - they would ask the woman, the bride, if she was Jewish or not? And the approved response is, of course, Racism! Shame! Nazism! Disgusting!

But of course, this is the essence of a religious wedding, the only kind permitted by Israeli law, which permits marriage only between people of the same religion. Didn't you, your parents and your children get married this way? Didn't you check before the ceremony whether the other party was Jewish? If so, what was wrong with the campaign ad

The unsurprising explanation came from the heart of the civilized gloom. "If there won't be two states here," warned the sage Amos Oz, "there will be an Arab state here." This is the real danger seen by the so-called left. Not that there will be, God forbid, a racist, benighted, undemocratic state, but that there will be a non-Jewish state, and worse, an Arab state.

So if that's the case, what's the essential difference between Oz and Shas? Why is Oz's racism applauded by the high-minded ones, while Shas' apparent racism is condemned?

The answer is written in white on black. Racism in the eyes of urbane Israel is when Mizrahim, Arabs and all kinds of dark people say not-nice things about European white Ashkenazim. By contrast, when the European white Ashkenazim say terrible things about Mizrahim, Arabs and the other darkies, this is the height of anti-racism and democracy at its best.

One more thing all those cursing the Shas broadcast should consider: It's not just at Shas weddings that the Judaism of the parties is checked out. The existence of the State of Israel and its entire essence are built on this examination. The Law of Return, which is the foundation stone of our country, states that the single criterion for getting citizenship is that those requesting it be Jewish.

Thus, if we say that the Shas party is racist and Nazi, the same must be said of the State of Israel. The ugliness you see in the mirror is your own.

So there we have it. Shas is simply a zionist party restating zionist principles.
