American workers more productive in spring

CNBC's Rick Santelli breaks down the latest data on productivity and labor, with CNBC's Steve Liesman.

By Reuters

U.S. nonfarm productivity rose more than expected in the second quarter as companies expanded output but only modestly increased the hours worked by their employees, data from the Labor Department showed on Wednesday.

Productivity climbed at a faster-than-expected 1.6 percent annual rate between April and June.

In the same report, the government also said productivity rose 0.7 percent last year, more than the initially estimated advance of 0.4 percent. In another revision, productivity declined less than initially thought in the first quarter of 2012, the Labor Department said.

The upwardly revised trend in recent productivity growth is heartening for the economy because in the long run living standards improve when workers are more productive.

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected productivity to increase at a 1.3 percent annual rate during the period.

Output increased at a 2.0 percent rate during the period, but hours worked only rose at a 0.4 percent rate, the department said.

The report also showed unit labor costs climbing 1.7 percent during the period, a faster pace than the 0.6 percent gain expected by economists polled by Reuters.

Fuel Fix ? Oil boom generates international interest in ND

Robert Peeler of California is working as a mechanic in Williston, N.D., to save his house and his family ranch. Peeler hopes his family can join him in North Dakota this fall. (AP Photo/Forum Communications Co., Amy Dalrymple)

WILLISTON, N.D. ? Moving to North Dakota was the best thing that ever happened to Robert Peeler.

After losing his job and facing hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, the Red Bluff, Calif., man hoped North Dakota was the route to turning his life around.

He found a good-paying job his first day in Williston and is now on a path to do just that.

?This is the only place where there?s really this much opportunity,? Peeler said.

Stories like Peeler?s are common in western North Dakota, where a recent scan of the Walmart parking lot in Williston showed license plates from 25 states.

It?s difficult to know just how many people have moved to North Dakota in the past year after hearing about the oil boom and the state?s job opportunities. But the North Dakota Department of Commerce provides a glimpse into which states? residents seem to be most attracted to North Dakota.

In the first six months of this year, the state?s relocation program added nearly 2,700 names into a database of people potentially interested in moving to North Dakota, said Adele Sigl, workforce talent and project coordinator.

Minnesotans topped the list of interested movers (242) followed by Californians (195), Washingtonians (169) and Floridians (159). North Dakota?s relocation program was contacted by someone in every U.S. state and also heard from interested job seekers in Nigeria, the Czech Republic and Jordan this year.

There are now more than 8,000 names in the program?s database.

Sigl said people are grateful to have a place to contact to learn more about moving to North Dakota.

?With working with the program, I have learned the importance of what that voice on the other end of the phone can mean to a person who is in need of a job and relocating to another state they know nothing about,? she said. ?I have been blessed and thanked many, many times over.?

One of the most popular questions Sigl gets is how to get a job in the oilfield. Some job seekers want to know if news reports about North Dakota?s booming economy and job openings are actually true.

?They?re just really, ?Come on. That can?t be happening because look at our state and our economy and what?s going on there,?? Sigl said.

She also fields questions that would amuse North Dakotans, like: Do people really work in the wintertime?

?They (job seekers) always ask about the weather. ?What?s the weather like up there?? I think they think we sit on an iceberg,? Sigl said.

As North Dakota becomes a melting pot of job seekers from around the world looking for opportunity, three men share their stories of what led them here.

A string of bad luck brought Robert Peeler to North Dakota, but now his luck is turning around.

He was laid off from his job as a mechanic for Land Rover after 9? years.

Then he and his brothers inherited their grandfather?s ranch and Peeler, 40, ?mortgaged our house to the hilt? to buy 1,160 cows with his brothers.

One cow got hoof and mouth disease, and all of the cows had to be put down, leaving the family with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

Three of Peeler?s brothers are now on the Gulf Coast doing offshore drilling. Peeler came to Williston about six weeks ago to work as a mechanic.

?We?re doing what we have to do,? Peeler said.

With the high demand for mechanics in the oil patch, Peeler found a job his first day and had to turn down three other offers.

The shop where he works has cars lined up waiting weeks to be worked on. Peeler often works into the evening and does work on the side to earn as much money as he can. He is working to start a mobile mechanic business on weekends.

Peeler has a wife, who works as a nurse, three sons and a stepdaughter back in California. He hopes they?ll be able to join him in Williston after he gets settled, and they may even make North Dakota their home.

?This is a great place to raise your kids,? Peeler said.

In the meantime, Peeler is sending most of the money he earns back to his family.

?I get to be a provider again,? Peeler said. ?This is the best thing to ever happen to me and my family.?

For East Coast entrepreneur Brad McHugh, the real estate opportunities in North Dakota were too good to ignore.

McHugh, a New Jersey native, has been living in Williston since March with White Dog Development Group, a firm he runs with his friend and business partner.

Work was steady for McHugh on the East Coast, where he still runs a general contracting and development company.

But McHugh, 35, decided he was in a position to take some risks and have an adventure in North Dakota.

?I figured I?d regret not trying it and I?d never regret trying it,? McHugh said.

McHugh did a lot of research before moving to North Dakota, and also took some scouting trips. But he and his partner discovered they need to be able to adapt to the dynamic conditions.

?Williston changes so aggressively every day that research is very relative,? McHugh said. ?It?s really more of get here, live it, figure it out.?

His company initially planned to take older buildings and repurpose them for current needs. They renovated a condemned downtown Williston building and will now lease it to a civil engineering firm for office space, with some housing.

Now White Dog is shifting its focus to raw land development. The company is developing 150 acres in McKenzie County about 15 minutes south of Williston for commercial and retail projects.

McHugh said working with people in North Dakota has been refreshing compared to the cutthroat competition he was accustomed to on the East Coast. He is planning to build a house and stay in North Dakota for at least two to three years.

?As long as it?s as fun as it is now,? McHugh said.

As CEO of a communications firm, John Karel is often coined ?chief expansion officer.?

The Stillwater, Minn., man leads ABcom, which specializes in installing and designing voice and data cabling and other applied business communications.

Karel has helped start offices in Arizona and Texas and is now launching an operation based in Williston.

?We knew it was booming here,? Karel said.

As new schools, hospitals, retail stores and offices open in the oil patch, ABcom will support the data and voice cabling and systems installation and service.

Karel has been working in Williston full time for all of 2012 and he has two other employees in North Dakota. More employees are ready to come once the operation gets established.

ABcom also is developing a technology that will allow oil companies to remotely monitor tanks, instruments and other gauges at well as sites over a cellphone line.

Karel said the technology is simpler and more affordable than other remote sensor systems, and it?s a better option than sending an employee to check on a location. He?s meeting with oil companies that are planning to test the new system.

?We think this is a great place. There is a lot of growth,? Karel said. ?We have long-term intentions, not just to come in for a month.?

The Great Gatsby Bumped to 2013

Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby delayed until Summer 2013

Moviegoers were preparing to be offered very?different flavors of Leonardo DiCaprio this Christmas, between Leo dropping racial epithets in?Quetin Tarantino?s Django Unchained ? and putting on a handsome face as the yearning protagonist in Baz Luhrmann?s Great Gatsby. The game plan has changed, now that Warner Bros. has pushed the 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald?s novel back from December 25th, 2012 to a (tentatively, unspecified) date in Summer 2013.

Scroll on down to learn the official explanation for why Warner Bros. has decided to delay the release of Great Gatsby for six months (at least).

Warner Bros. President of Domestic Distribution Dan Fellman and President of International Distribution Veronika Kwan Vandenberg have issued the following statements (via an official press release):

In making the announcement, Fellman stated,??Based on what we?ve seen, Baz Luhrmann?s incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald?s American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible.?

Kwan Vandenberg confirmed,??Baz is known for being innovative, but with this film he has done something completely unexpected?making it in 3D?while capturing the emotion, the intimacy, the power and the spectacle of the time. The responses we?ve had to some of the early sneak peeks have been phenomenal, and we think ?The Great Gatsby? will be the perfect summer movie around the world.?

Peter Jackson?s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arrives this year on December 14th, less than two weeks before Great Gatsby was previously slated to open in theaters. It?s surprising that Warner Bros. has waited until now?to reposition Luhrmann?s $150 million project, so it won?t have to compete against Jackson?s return to Middle-earth at the box office.

The Great Gatsby (2012) tobey maguire leonardo dicaprio carey mulligan joel edgerton

The cast of Baz Luhrmann's 'Great Gatsby'

The Great Gatsby trailer overflows with brazen production design and energetic visual style -?with the emotion factor cranked up to 11, in keeping with Luhrmann?s usual storytelling. That?s to say: Great Gatsby will draw in the filmmaker?s fans, along with those either intrigued (or morbidly-curious) to see what Fitzgerald?s literary masterpiece is like in Luhrmann?s hands. It nonetheless?seems like the sort of prestige flick that?d do better financial business when awards season fever is rampant.

Moulin Rouge! opened in May of 2001 and became a serious awards-contender, so perhaps Warner Bros. is hoping to recreate the critical success of that Luhrmann production (while also bringing in more box office loot). Warner Bros. has Man of Steel arriving next June and Pacific Rim in July, so a May 2013 launch date for Great Gatsby makes all the more sense (looking from that angle).

We?ll keep you updated on The Great Gatsby as the story develops.

Israeli windsurfer's stormy voyage to Olympic heartache

Alongside the sparkling Mediterranean, far from the English south coast where Israel's Lee-El Korsiz was chasing Olympic windsurfing glory, a group of young Israelis huddled round a video screen at the sailing club they share, willing her to break the Jewish State's medal drought.

In a modest wire-fenced compound, alongside a handkerchief-sized harbour, children and young teens gulped down cold drinks under a blazing sun as they waited for pre-regatta favourite Korsiz, twice world champion and the Mikhmoret Sailing Centre's most celebrated alumnus, to do her stuff.

"Lee Korsiz is a wind surfer who I really admire," said 12-year-old Yuval Sivan. "It doesn't make any difference to me that she's a girl. I want to get to her level."

Korsiz, 28, had a long and perilous voyage from the sleepy seaside village of Mikhmoret, 39 kilometres (24 miles) north of Tel Aviv, to Tuesday's medal race at Weymouth.

Roi Bensler, an instructor at the local council run centre where she started her career and has trained ever since, said that she had a near-fatal accident while surfing in Hawaii.

"A wave overturned her and someone slammed into her by mistake," he told AFP. "She was in intensive care for some days on a respirator. It was bad but she got over it, it's a comeback from the movies."

There was another close call during last year's European championships.

"She fell and the sail fell on tip of her," Bensler said. "As you can see they're not small sails.

Media reports said that a French coach saw that she was trapped unconscious underwater, extricated her and resuscitated her.

Young Yuval's father, Yehuda Sivan, is a friend of the Korsiz family and says he has watched her take on challenge after challenge since childhood.

"She was good at all kinds of sport,' he said. "She used to knock boys down at judo, she's a very good surfer, she has extraordinary mental strength."

She needs it, he says, for her chosen discipline of windsurfing.

"It sounds fun but it's insanely hard work. Hours on the sea in all waters, in all seas, with no compromises. It's a sport where you're alone, it's not a team competition when you can get a hug from someone, it's just crazy."

Bensler said that the beach front video viewing was organised for the club's younger members, to give them inspiration.

He said that she was a familiar figure to many of them.

"She did a lot of training here, with the gang, with the kids," he said.

Flags fluttered around the club entrance and the gates were gates were draped with a banner reading "London awaits you Lee".

When the race began and her rig came into sight on the video screen, its sail emblazoned with Israel's distinctive blue and white Star of David flag, there was enthusiastic whistling, applause and stamping of feet in the club yard.

But as the minutes passed and it became clear that Korsiz was falling behind, silence fell.

Although she lay second going into the medal race she finished ninth to drop to sixth overall and with her defeat went any realistic hope of an Israeli medal in the 2012 Olympics.

Israeli media said that it would be the first time the Jewish State's athletes returned from the games without a medal since Seoul in 1988.

The stunned silence was only broken when Mikhmoret-born Amit Inbar, who windsurfed for Israel in the Sydney and Barcelona Olympics asked the kids to give a round of applause for Korsiz's "tremendous achievement."

They did so enthusiastically, but then drifted away wordlessly.

"I think it is harder to watch from the sidelines that to actually take part," Inbar, 39 and now manager of a windsurfing school, told AFP.

"What is Lee doing now? She is crying, what else. Everything she has been building up inside this week will spill out. I was on the verge of tears, I don't want to imagine what she is going through."

"In the life of a sportsperson, that's part of the road you travel," he added.

"You are formed by your failures or lack of success and I imagine that if she decides to continue the sporting life, the next time that she's in the same situation she'll act differently and have more success."

Martin brings tears to Canton

All-time fourth-leading rusher tells horrific stories about his tough upbringing

New Hall of Famer and former running back Curtis Martin poses with his bust alongside former NFL coach Bill Parcells.

By JOE KAY

updated 10:16 p.m. ET Aug. 4, 2012

CANTON, Ohio - The linemen led the way as they always do, accepting their inductions into the Pro Football Hall of Fame with an abundance of humility. Curtis Martin finished the evening by supplying plenty of tears.

The last of the six players to have their bronze busts unveiled Saturday night, Martin used the big stage to recall his rough life, his mother's pain and his life-long indifference to the game that allowed him to become famous.

"I don't necessarily have notes, so I'm going to just bare my soul," Martin cautioned. "So bear with me."

His moving story was the longest of the six and had the audience of 12,100 cheering supportively whenever one of the NFL's greatest running backs got choked up or lost for words. It was quite a way to end a three-hour induction that celebrated some of the game's best blockers and tacklers.

Linemen Willie Roaf, Chris Doleman, Cortez Kennedy and Dermontti Dawson and 1950s cornerback Jack Butler were the first inducted, accepting their honor with simple thanks and generally short stories.

All the way through, the evening had a strong Pittsburgh flavor.

Hundreds of Steelers fans sat on the field and in the stands, waving yellow "Terrible Towels" to celebrate the city's starring role. Two of the new Hall of Famers played for the Steelers - Butler and Dawson. Doleman and Martin played for the University of Pittsburgh after growing up in Pennsylvania.

When it was time for Martin, a former Jets star, to finish the evening, Broadway Joe Namath couldn't help but notice the "J-E-T-S! J-E-T-S!" chants were getting overwhelmed.

"I hear a lot of big mouths from Pittsburgh out there," he told the crowd. "And justifiably - yes, yes!"

Martin soon had them dabbing their eyes.

He described growing up in a rough neighborhood in Pittsburgh, the son of an alcoholic father who would beat and torture his mother by setting her hair on fire or pressing burning cigarettes to her legs. His mother, Rochella, wiped tears from her eyes as he shared his story, occasionally pausing to collect himself.

"My greatest achievement in my life was healing my mother and nurturing my mother," Martin said.

She urged him to play football to stay out of trouble. Even when New England coach Bill Parcells decided to draft him out of Pitt, Martin wasn't sure he wanted to play. His pastor told him he could use football as a platform to do greater things.

"I played for a purpose bigger than the game because I knew that the love for the game just wasn't in my heart," Martin said.

He followed Parcells to the Jets and finished his career and the fourth-leading rusher in NFL history. Parcells became one of his biggest influences, and Martin chose him for the introduction on Saturday.

"He has tremendous compassion for his fellow man," Parcells said. "He is, I think, the poster child for what the NFL is supposed to be. You come into the league, maximize your abilities, you save your money, you make a smooth transition into society and then you pass all those things on to other people. That's what this guy has done."

The night that belonged to those who didn't have it easy.

Roaf was inducted first and set the tone. Standing in front of the large crowd in an unfamiliar role - getting attention for something good - he acknowledged feeling out of place.

"You know, it's an offensive lineman," Roaf said. "I didn't get singled out in front of a large audience very often, and when I did, it was usually by a referee who was singling me out by saying, `Holding No. 77.'

"That's not going to happen today. And it wasn't too often when I played."

Roaf was one of the greatest players in Saints history, so good that he regularly made the Pro Bowl even though New Orleans had only one winning season in his nine years there. His induction gave the franchise something to celebrate after an offseason clouded by its bounty scandal.

Saints players sat in the last three rows of seats on the field, wearing black t-shirts with Roaf's No. 77 on the back. They're in town to play Arizona in the Hall of Fame preseason game on Sunday night.

Kennedy has something in common with Roaf. Like the offensive tackle from New Orleans, the defensive tackle from Seattle excelled on bad teams. It was his sustained excellence - not his team's success - that got him into the hall.

Kennedy grew into the game's top defensive tackle during his 11 seasons with Seattle. Even though Seattle went 2-14 in 1992 and Kennedy got double-teamed, he was so good that he was chosen the league's best defensive player.

"That's bad when you go to the game and the defensive coordinator says, `Guys, we're not going to win the game. Let's don't embarrass ourselves.' You know we're in for a long year then," he said.

Dawson got the Steelers fans revved with his induction speech honoring the town and the franchise. Dawson succeeded Mike Webster as the Steelers' center, then followed him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

"Mike was a leader whether he wanted to (be) or not because he led by example, and I tried to emulate everything Mike did," Dawson said. "Mike had a profound impact on my life and even today, I try to lead by example and be like Mike."

Dawson chose high school football coach Steve Parker to present him. If not for Parker, he might not have played the game. Dawson had a bad experience playing the sport in middle school and quit.

Parker met him in a hallway of their high school during his junior year and made him rethink.

"I came across this person who I thought was a man," Parker said. "I said to him, `Sir, may I help you?' He said he goes to school here, and I said, `Where have you been all my life?"'

Doleman also traces his football roots to Pennsylvania, where he grew up and went to college. He recalled that his father had one rule: Finish what you start.

"Thank you for teaching me the importance of finishing what you started," Doleman said. "And if it's any indication today, I finished the game I signed up for."

Butler, inducted second, took the most unexpected path to the hall. He didn't play football in high school, picked the game in college at St. Bonaventure and entered the NFL as an undrafted player in 1951, just another player filling out the Steelers roster.

Butler, now 84, thanked his family and friends for being in Canton for his long-awaited moment.

"Heck, I'm thankful I'm here," he said. "I thank you all."

Hockey: Dutch into semis, India routed

The Netherlands team joined their women's counterparts as semi-finalists in the Olympic hockey tournament on Sunday by beating Germany 3-1 in their fourth pool match at the Riverside Arena.

A draw between the great European rivals would have seen both teams through to the last four but Germany will now have to get a point from their fifth and last pool match on Tuesday.
Germany made a great start against the Dutch.

Christopher Zeller converted a penalty corner inside three minutes but Bob de Voogd popped in a rebound in the 14th minute and the teams turned round level at 1-1.

The second half started as dramatically as the first half with stalwart Teun de Nooijer setting up and scoring in the first minute.

De Nooijer was making his 450th appearance for the Dutch, a world record while his goal was his 218th.

When Mink van der Weerden found a top corner of the German goal with a corner flick in the 41st minute, the Dutch could concentrate on maintaining their two-goal advantage.

The Dutch men who lost to Germany on penalties in the 2008 Beijing semi-finals have qualified for the semi-finals in every Olympics since the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

Germany would have reached the last four if South Korea had failed to beat India.

As it was the Koreans were much superior to the Indians at finishing and won 4-1.

They now have six points and are three points behind second-placed Germany. Korea has yet to play Netherlands.

Nam Hyun-Woo converted two late penalty corners for the Koreans against the eight-time champions.

India's defeat left them bottom of group B without a point and they are now condemned to the 11/12th place match, a far cry from their halcyon days.

Pakistan stepped back into contention for a semi-final place in group A with a nail-biting 5-4 win over South Africa.

It took Pakistan's points tally to seven from their four matches.

Australia, the World Cup holders, let a 3-0 lead slip against hosts Great Britain and were held to a 3-3 draw in the top of the table match.

The result means the two have eight points, one more than Pakistan, after each has played four of their five group games.

Australia made a whirlwind start with two goals by Russell Ford in the first 11 minutes.?
Mark Knowles, given too much room, increased Australia's lead six minutes into the second half.

Six minutes later Jonty Clarke's centre was deflected into goal for the the first of Britain's goals.

Barry Middleton, the British captain, scored the second from a corner variation and James Tindall deflected in four minutes before the final hooter.

Australia play Pakistan in their final pool match on Tuesday, while Britain take on Spain.

Spain, the Beijing Olympic silver medallists, kept alive their hopes of making the medal stand again with a 3-1 win over Argentina in the late game.

Their second successive win took them to seven points, a point behind Australia and Britain and below third placed Pakistan on goal difference.

Industry News: Rowlings book withheld from most foreign publishers ...

Amid Piracy Concerns, Advanced Copies of JK Rowling?s New Book Withheld from Foreign Publishers

September 27 will be a good day to be able to read English, as US and UK audiences will be able to rush right out and buy JK Rowling?s new book, The Casual Vacancy. Publishers in France and Germany will get advanced copies. Everyone else has to wait. The Blair Partnership, Rowling?s literary agency, is withholding copies from non-English speaking publishers until the day of release to prevent unauthorized copies from finding their way to the public. Foreign publishers are concerned that the late release will cause them to develop poor translations, because of the rush to market. Rowling?s agent says that none of the?Harry Potter?novels were released worldwide at the same time, so this shouldn?t been that different.

What this means to you:?Piracy is still an issue that has to be resolved. In spite of some publishers removing digital rights management (DRM) software from their books, there?s still concern about theft of intellectual property.

HarperCollins Launches New Christian Imprint

Remember a couple weeks ago when this very blog said that when HarperCollins bought Thomas Nelson, they didn?t plan to combine it with Zondervan, which it already owns? Turns out that wasn?t exactly true. The two imprints will move into a single division, led by former Thomas Nelson CEO Mark Schoenwald. Former Zondervan CEO Scott Macdonald will leave his post. In the new organization, the two companies will operate as separate business units. The press release announcing the move says the new imprint will collaborate where appropriate, but otherwise compete with each other.

What this means to you: More consolidation in the Christian market. Maybe I?m wrong, but I can?t see these companies getting into an auction against each other for content.

Legal Costs Slice Simon & Schuster?s Earnings

Simon and Schuster?s sales rose three percent in the second quarter (ending June 30), but the costs associated with lawsuits related to their use of the agency model for e-books have eaten through all that increased revenue and then some. Lawsuit-related costs led to a $10 million drop in revenue for the quarter. Digital sales were strong, increasing 44% over last year?s second quarter, with total sales of $40 million. Sales were strong in all divisions with some softness in Europe. S&S was the third of five companies to settle with state attorneys general over the Apple collusion lawsuit.

What this means to you: Although S&S CEO Carolyn Reidy said the company had accounted for the legal costs, the settlement took a substantial piece of operating revenue. The cost associated with settlement could mean any or all of the following things: S&S figured the costs associated with going through with the suit would have been prohibitive, the odds of not losing the suit were small, the damages for the suit would have been substantial.

Child Porn Ring Uncovered Using Stuffed Toy Bunny

DENISE LAVOIE, Associated Press

BOSTON ? The men came from different walks of life on two continents: a children's puppeteer in Florida, a hotel manager in Massachusetts, an emergency medical technician in Kansas, a day care worker in the Netherlands. In all, 43 men have been arrested over the past two years in a horrific, far-flung child porn network that unraveled like a sweater with a single loose thread.

In this case, the thread was a stuffed toy bunny.

The bunny, seen in a photo of a half-naked, distraught 18-month-old boy, was used to painstakingly trace a molester to Amsterdam. From there, investigators made one arrest after another of men accused of sexually abusing children, exchanging explicit photos of the attacks and even chatting online about abducting, cooking and eating youngsters.

Authorities have identified more than 140 young victims so far and say there is no end in sight as they pore through hundreds of thousands of images found on the suspects' computers. They are also trying to determine whether the men who talked about murder and cannibalism actually committed such acts or were just sharing twisted fantasies.

The still-widening investigation has been code-named Holitna, after a river in Alaska with many tributaries.

"They are the worst of the worst," said Bruce Foucart, agent in charge of the U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement agency's Homeland Security Investigations unit in Boston. "This isn't just a child that's nude and someone's taking pictures of him; this is a child that's being raped by an adult, which is horrific."

The case began to unfold when Robert Diduca, a Sheraton hotel manager from Milford, Mass., sent the photo of the Dutch boy to an undercover federal agent in Boston. Diduca, a married father of three who used the screen name "Babytodd," thought he was sending the picture to another man with a sexual interest in babies and toddlers.

Agents forwarded the photo to Interpol, the international police organization, and to several other countries.

An investigator for the Dutch police recognized the stuffed bunny as Miffy, a familiar character in a series of Dutch children's books. She also traced the boy's orange sweater to a small Amsterdam store that had sold only 20 others like it.

The boy's photo was broadcast on a national TV program similar to "America's Most Wanted." Within minutes, friends and relatives called the child's mother.

Robert Mikelsons, a 27-year-old day care worker who baby-sat the boy, was arrested. On his computer were thousands and thousands of images of children being molested and raped, including the boy holding the stuffed bunny.

Photos and online chats found on computers owned by Diduca and Mikelsons led to more than three dozen other suspects in seven countries, including Canada, Britain, Germany, Sweden and Mexico. The oldest victim in the Netherlands was 4, the youngest just 19 days old.

Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, whose office prosecuted Diduca, said the demand for photos of sexual assaults of young children, including babies and toddlers, has increased sharply in recent years.

"This demand leads to the abuse of children, yet there is this misconception that somehow, viewing child pornography is a victimless crime," said. "It clearly is not."

Diduca pleaded guilty to child porn and sexual exploitation charges and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. His lawyer, Richard Sweeney, said Diduca was sexually abused as a child by a Boy Scout leader. "He gets it, he knows he needs to be punished, he knows what he did is wrong," Sweeney said.

Mikelsons also received an 18-year sentence, followed by indefinite psychiatric commitment, after confessing to sexually abusing more than 80 children.

The horror did not let up after the Mikelsons case.

In May, authorities arrested Michael Arnett of Roeland Park, Kan., after finding pornographic photos he allegedly produced. Agents discovered the pictures when they searched the computer of a Wisconsin man who had been chatting online with Mikelsons.

What they found on Arnett's computer was unlike anything some of the investigators had ever come across: long, graphic, online chats about his desire to abduct, kill and eat children. They said he had also made photos of a naked 2-year-old boy in a roasting pan inside his oven. The child and two other boys Arnett allegedly abused and photographed were later identified and found alive.

In July, authorities arrested four men they say had online discussions with Arnett about kidnapping and eating children. Those arrested included Ronald Brown, a children's puppeteer from Largo, Fla. (A YouTube video shows Brown during an appearance on a Christian TV kids show in the 1980s. In the video, he tells a child puppet that he did the right thing by refusing to look at "dirty pictures" some other youngsters tried to show him.)

In excerpts of an online chat between Arnett and Brown from 2011, the two men appear to be discussing their desire to cook a child for Easter.

"he would make a fine Easter feast," Arnett says.

"yes, his thighs and butt cheeks would be fantastic for Easter," Brown responds.

A lawyer for Arnett would not comment on the allegations. Brown's lawyer did not return calls.

Prosecutors said Brown acknowledged his online conversations but said that it was all a fantasy and that he would never hurt anyone.

"Obviously the discussions regarding their claims of cannibalism are disturbing and a concern to our agency," said ICE spokesman Ross Feinstein. He said agents are following all leads "to make sure these individuals didn't follow through on any of their claims."

To find the young victims, investigators carefully studied thousands of photos, read hours of Internet chats and worked with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. They also employed some forensic wizardry.

After finding a video on Diduca's computer of a bound, 2-year-old boy being raped, investigators enhanced the images of furniture and carpet and determined the attack took place in a motel room in Bakersfield, Calif.

Then they pinpointed the date by way of a TV that was playing in the background in the video, figuring out exactly when a particular episode of "Family Matters" aired along with a certain Pepperidge Farms commercial.

A man from Black Forest, Colo., was arrested and is awaiting trial.

Similarly, in the Arnett case, investigators discovered that a water bottle in one of the photographs carried the name of a swim and scuba center in Overland Park, Kan. With the help of teachers at an elementary school, they identified three children shown in the photographs, including the toddler posed in the roasting pan.

The mother of one of the boys said she initially did not believe the allegations against Arnett, a family friend for about 15 years. She said her son, now 7, and several nephews often spent weekends at Arnett's home four or five years ago.

"Well, when we first got the phone call, we thought there's no way. You guys got the wrong guy," she said. The Associated Press does not identify victims of sexual abuse or their families.

But then investigators showed her photos Arnett had allegedly taken of her son with a shirt and no pants.

"Regret? For sending my son with a sick-minded guy, that's the only regret I have. I had no idea," she said. "It's depressing."

For the agents working on the case, the leads never seem to end.

Last week, they arrested another Massachusetts man after finding child pornography and photos of what appeared to be dead children on his computer. He allegedly had online chats with Arnett and Brown.

More arrests are expected.

"The agents that work for me are extremely driven on this type of investigation," said Bart Cahill, assistant agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston. "They really believe that they are taking out horrific violators and saving kids."

Bangladesh 'dead man' returns home to family | Pakistan Today ...

DHAKA?-?A Bangladeshi man who went missing 23 years ago has returned to his ancestral village and shocked his family who had long given him up for dead.

Moslemuddin Sarkar, who had been missing since 1989, returned home on Tuesday with help from the International Committee of the Red Cross after spending 15 years in Pakistani jails. Hundreds of well-wishers turned out in Bishnurampur village in northern Mymensingh district to catch a glimpse of him and congratulate the tearful and jubilant family.

Sarkar told AFP by telephone he had entered India without valid documents in 1989 without informing his family. He was then caught as he tried to cross into Pakistan in 1997 where he was jailed for trying to enter the country illegally. ?I went to Pakistan believing that I would get a better job there. But they caught me at the border. I was beaten and tortured in prison,? he explained in a mixture of Urdu and Bengali. ?I wrote dozens of letters to my village address, but did not have any clue that they were never posted. At one stage I lost all hope of returning home,? he said, adding that he was ?delighted? to see his mother still alive.

The Red Cross became involved and facilitated Sarkar?s return after his family received a tip-off that he was locked up in Pakistan and turned to the organisation for help, according to spokesperson Onchita Shadman, who described him as ?frail and overwhelmed?.

Julhas Uddin, Sarkar?s younger brother, said most of the family had feared the worst. ?We searched for him for years and finally gave up hope believing he might have drowned in the sea. But our mother always believed that her son would return home one day,? he told AFP. ?My mother passed out as he hugged her after returning. It was a heartbreaking scene. He could not control his tears for hours,? he said.

Surprise! | marleah

The best laid plans ?

So little Aoife, who was due on August 10, decided to grace us with her presence eight weeks early.

It?s a little surprising and scary when your water breaks only one week after your baby shower, and one day after being at an out-of-town family reunion. And it?s even more surprising and scary when you find out that you will be flown in a helicopter to a hospital three hours away! Above all, it is scary to see your brand new baby girl surrounded by cords and wires and tubes and connected to monitors that flash and beep while in the NICU.

That said, it is a GREAT feeling to know that she is healthy and is being taken care of by the best doctors and nurses possible.

Over time, Aoife was able to come off the IV and eventually her feeding tube was removed as well. After just a couple of days in the NICU, Aoife was moved to a special care room where I could stay as well (and where I spent most of my time). Between feeding times, I had just enough time to grab a bite to eat in the hospital cafeteria (surprisingly delicious!) OR grab a shower OR get a bit of sleep ? but never all three!

After three weeks of hard work growing, Aoife was ready to come home. She was just over 5 pounds when we left the hospital for the three-hour drive home (which becomes a 7-hour drive when you have to stop to nurse a baby and stop to get health insurance information up to date).

Suddenly, a week after we got home, she was one month old. Already! Aoife continues to grow and get bigger and stronger. She has grown so much lengthwise that she has outgrown some of her newborn-size outfits already.

So what happened here at home in all that time I was away? Our fantastic families pitched in to take care of the dog and the cats and clean our house, and they helped the proud papa get the nursery ready so that Aoife had a place to sleep when she finally got to come home.

It?s been a very crazy summer, and everything that does not involve this little girl has been put on the back burner. However, I have learned that time spent nursing is also a great time to think of things to blog about! Be warned, there may be some baby-centric posts coming your way.

I hope to focus on handy tips and tricks that I?ve learned from parents who are much more experienced than I am, as well as life after baby in general: getting back into running and exercising, finding time to keep up my busy reading schedule, and of course, the great stuff I make (and as time goes on, the great stuff Aoife and I make together).

So far, blogging with baby just means that I stop every few sentences to kiss this little head, so accessible when Aoife dozes on my lap as I type. It?s addictive, I tell you.

Restaurant Business Model Review | Israel Positive

By admin |

As with any entrepreneurial endeavor, starting your own restaurant can be one of the most satisfying and rewarding ways to earn a living. Any successful business incorporates, and is a variation of, one of a few business models. While the strategies discussed here are applicable among virtually every industry, here they will be discussed as they apply to the restaurant and food service industries only. As with any business venture, the strategy you use in your business should be adopted only after careful restaurant market research.

The first and most widely recognized strategy is the low-cost, high volume strategy. As with any product, the more you can make of a particular item, generally speaking, the cheaper it gets to produce each item. In the case of restaurants, the more food you can make and serve in a day the less expensive each meal served will be. Because the food and labor to make the food will cost less, you can pass the savings on to your customers and sell more food than your higher priced competitors. The prerequisite of this is a large market with lots of people who will buy the food you are trying to sell. If there is not a large enough market to support a low cost competitor, this option will generally not work and you should look into starting a highly differentiated establishment.

Differentiation is the antitheses of the low-cost, high volume strategy. Here, given that your restaurant market research?rules out a successful low-cost option, you try to find ways of making your restaurant noticeably different from all other competitors, but in a way that adds value to the consumer. This could mean a more exotic menu, more investment into restaurant ambiance, better customer service, etc. The key to this approach is finding the right combination of all the extras so that you can charge as high a margin on your products as possible. Using this strategy, you should never be the lowest priced option on the market. You will serve less food, but make more money on each serving. There are few successful examples of these restaurants on a national scale, primarily because in order to differentiate itself, the business model must change significantly from market to market. This is naturally prohibitive of a national, large scale differentiated, restaurant franchise. Although, this is not to say that they are less profitable than the national large scale competitors on a per-capital basis.

Scheme to get credit to recession-hit economy begins

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's banks can start tapping into a new government programme to provide them with cheap funding designed to get more credit to flow through the recession-hit economy, the finance ministry said on Wednesday.

The scheme - which offers funding at below-market rates against a broad range of collateral if banks continue or extend lending to businesses and consumers - is likely to ultimately replace earlier credit easing schemes, the ministry said.

The "funding for lending" (FLS) scheme draw down window is now open for the next eighteen months and banks and building societies can borrow at cheaper rates, for periods of up to four years, the finance ministry added.

"The more generous FLS has officially opened for business and will in time effectively take over from the NLGS (National Loan Guarantee Scheme), delivering credit easing to the whole economy," George Osborne, the Chancellor, said in a statement.

Part of efforts to lift the economy out of recession, the plan was jointly announced by Osborne and Bank of England Governor Mervyn King in June and details were presented last month.

Previous schemes to spur lending since the financial crisis have failed to boost the economy. This has put pressure on the BoE and the Conservative-led coalition government, which have been quick to blame much of the country's economic woes on the neighbouring euro zone debt crisis.

Osborne and the Bank insist that the latest credit easing scheme will be different, as it ties banks' access to the scheme and cost of using it directly to whether they raise total lending to British firms and households.

The government is making an initial 80 billion pounds available, though how much the economy is boosted will depend on banks' demand for the cheap funding.
