WORTHINGTON ? In the game of baseball, good pitching goes a long way toward winning games. The stellar performance of Worthington Legion?s Jon Reller in a 6-3 win against Fairmont Thursday night went a long way to proving that hypothesis.
?Jonny did a good job,? Worthington coach Todd Rogers said. ?He threw a lot of strikes. He was wearing down there a little bit, so we had to save him a little bit. We have a few games coming up here, so we had Lucas come in and he did a good job also.?
Worthington jumped back from a 5-3 heartbreaker on Tuesday night against Pipestone to put together a complete game of timely hitting and solid defense. Once again, coach Rogers gave his team a pre-game pep talk that seemed to do the trick of getting his team to play up to their potential.
?I told the boys that if we play ball we can beat these guys,? Rogers said. ?We hit the ball. We had dang good pitching and made the plays. We did a good job tonight. Everything went our way tonight.?
It seemed like the game would turn into a pitcher?s duel with both Reller and Fairmont pitcher Bryce Holm throwing two strikeouts and getting the other batter to ground out in the first fram. But after Reller threw three straight strike-outs in the top of the second, Worthington opened up the bottom of the inning with a double by Tyler Hatterman. Two batters later, Tommy Hayenga hit another double to get Hatterman home.
?We hit the ball pretty good,? Rogers said. ?We didn?t get a lot of hits, but we had three or four doubles. It seems like we scored when we got them on.?
In the top of the third Reller continued to dominate forcing Fairmont to fly out twice while getting another batter to strike-out swinging. Worthington?s bunting game got started with a two out bunt single by Hayenga in the bottom of the third.
?Alex [Hayenga] got some good bunts down, some really good bunts,? Rogers said. ?That was great for us.?
After another scoreless frame, Fairmont threatened to score in the top of the fifth before Worthington put out the flames. With back to back singles by Fairmont?s Andy Reiter and Bryce Holm to put two men on board, Sean Klein hit what looked to be a two RBI single.
But good fielding in the outfield allowed Worthington to get the ball to home plate in time to tag out Reiter with time to spare. A quick throw from catcher Blake Rogers caught Holm off guard at third base, which turned the single out into two.
The bottom of the fifth saw Worthington jump back onto the offensive, adding two more runs to put them up 3-0. After an early fly out, Lucas Henning hit a one out double followed up by another Hayenga bunt single to put runners on first and third.
?We played good small ball and had good bunts as well,? Rogers said.
Following up the two hits, Hayenga attempted to steal second, only to get frozen between the bases by Fairmont pitcher Holm. Holm appeared to forget about the runner on third when he casually strolled toward Hayenga waiting to throw him out at first and second.
With the pitcher?s back to him, Henning saw his opportunity and took off for home just before Holm realized his mistake and threw the ball home. The pitch was too late to catch Henning and the throw allowed Hayenga to reach third.
?It felt good. Arm felt good,? Reller said. ?My curveball was working. I had good defense tonight, so that was good.?
The top of the sixth inning was one Worthington would like to have back. After a single and a double by Fairmont, Ryan Noll hit an RBI single to put men on first and second.
During the next at bat, relief pitcher Lucas Henning made a bad throw to try and pick off the runner stealing third only to have his throw roll past the third baseman, allowing another run to score, bringing Fairmont within one.
Worthington would have its revenge in the bottom of the inning when an error, a single and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third. After a ground out to the mound, Fairmont pitcher Holm threw two consecutive wild pitches to score both runners.
With another runner on first after a walk, Lucas Henning got his second hit of the night on an RBI double to put Worthington up 6-2.
?It was nice that we hit the ball,? Reller said. ?We got our pitchers some running support. Nate [Jensen] should have had the win against Pipestone [Tuesday], but we didn?t help him out. I got help tonight.?
Henning finished off the game, allowing one run in the seventh before shutting the door on a swinging strikeout for a final score of 6-3.
Worthington Legion plays Fulda tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Worthington.

Last year, during his best three-month stretch, Jordan Golson sold about $750,000 worth of computers and gadgets at the Apple Store in Salem, N.H. It was a performance that might have called for a bottle of Champagne -- if that were a luxury Mr. Golson could have afforded.
"I was earning $11.25 an hour," he said. "Part of me was thinking, 'This is great. I'm an Apple fan, the store is doing really well.' But when you look at the amount of money the company is making and then you look at your paycheck, it's kind of tough."
America's love affair with the smartphone has helped create tens of thousands of jobs at places like Best Buy and Verizon Wireless and will this year pump billions into the economy.
Within this world, the Apple Store is the undisputed king, a retail phenomenon renowned for impeccable design, deft service and spectacular revenues. Last year, the company's 327 global stores took in more money per square foot than any other U.S. retailer -- wireless or otherwise -- and almost double that of Tiffany, which was No. 2 on the list, according to the research firm RetailSails.
Worldwide, its stores sold $16 billion in merchandise.
But most of Apple's employees enjoyed little of that wealth. While consumers tend to think of Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., as the company's heart and soul, a majority of its workers in the United States are not engineers or executives with hefty salaries and bonuses but rather hourly wage earners selling iPhones and MacBooks.
About 30,000 of the 43,000 Apple employees in this country work in Apple Stores, as members of the service economy, and many of them earn about $25,000 a year. They work inside the world's fastest growing industry, for the most valuable company, run by one of the country's most richly compensated chief executives, Tim Cook. Last year, he received stock grants, which vest over a 10-year period, that at today's share price would be worth more than $570 million.
And though Apple is unparalleled as a retailer, when it comes to its lowliest workers, the company is a reflection of the technology industry as a whole.
Much of the debate about U.S. unemployment has focused on why companies have moved factories overseas, but only 8 percent of the U.S. work force is in manufacturing, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Job growth has for decades been led by service-related work.

According to a new report, the Microsoft Surface will be Wi-Fi only ? at least at first.?
By Matthew Shaer / June 22, 2012
EnlargeLater this year ? and probably this fall ? Microsoft will release a tablet computer called the Surface.
google_ads[0].line2 + '

google_ads[0].line3 + '
We know a lot about the Surface already. For instance, we know it will have a 10.6-inch screen, a pair of cameras, and one of two versions of the forthcoming Windows 8 operating system. But we don't know what kind of antennas will be on board ? and in turn, what kind of Internet connections the Surface will support. 3G? 4G?
Try Wi-Fi only ? at least at first. According to Bloomberg News, which quotes two anonymous sources, the Surface will initially retail without 3G or 4G compatibility. (Bloomberg implies that Microsoft is leaving the window open for a 3G or 4G Surface down the road.) That could be a disadvantage for the Surface, a tablet intended to compete with a range of tablets, including the iPad, that sell in 4G and Wi-Fi-only versions.?
Right? Well, maybe not, James Kendrick of ZDNet suggests.?
"Indications are that Wi-Fi iPads are the choice of many mainstream consumers as most folks rarely use them outside of hotspots. The 3G/4G iPads sell in much smaller numbers, and then only because Apple has such good deals with the US carriers to keep them contract free," Kendrick writes. "Microsoft needs to make a big initial push to get the Surface into the home, not the workplace. Wi-Fi is all that is needed to make that happen."?
As Alexandra Chang of Wired notes, a recent study from NPD says a whopping 65 percent of users don't bother with anything more than a Wi-Fi connection. Count this blogger as one of those users. In the year that we've owned our iPad, we've had need of 3G service exactly once ? and that was only in an airport, where the Wi-Fi connection was inexplicably down.
So yes, Microsoft. Go Wi-Fi only. You have our blessing.

A Chinese spacecraft carrying three astronauts has carried out a manual docking with an orbiting module, a first for the country as it strives to match American and Russian exploits in space.
The Shenzhou 9 capsule completed the manoeuver with the Tiangong 1 module live on national television.
It follows a docking last week that was carried out by remote control from a ground base in China.
The Chinese astronauts have been living and working in the module for the past week as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station. They returned to the Shenzhou 9 capsule early today and disconnected in preparation for the manual re-connection.
The crew includes 33-year-old Liu Yang, an air force pilot and China's first female space traveller.
Liu is joined by mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, and crew mate Liu Wang, 43.
Their mission, which is expected to last at least 10 days, is China's fourth manned mission. Shenzhou 9 launched on June 16 from the Jiuquan centre on the edge of the Gobi desert in northern China.
China is hoping to join the United States and Russia as the only countries to send independently maintained space stations into orbit. It is already one of just three nations to have launched manned spacecraft on their own.
Another manned mission to the module is planned later this year. Possible future missions could include sending a man to the moon.
The Tiangong 1, which was launched last year, is due to be replaced by a permanent space station around 2020. That station is to weigh about 60 tons, slightly smaller than Nasa's Skylab of the 1970s and about one-sixth the size of the 16-nation International Space Station.

Veterans and active-duty U.S. service members are joining together to launch the "Our Lives, Our Rights" campaign.
"Our Lives, Our Rights" aims to provide U.S. service members with information about their legal rights, in particular their right to refuse deployment. It is premised on the belief that thousands of U.S. service members already qualify as Conscientious Objectors, or qualify to be exempt from deployment for mental health reasons, but are unaware of or afraid to exercise those rights.
"Our Lives, Our Rights" will organize U.S. service members, veterans, military families and supporters to reach out to active-duty troops with the information they need to avert deployment or military service, and provide support to those exercising those rights. The campaign will also make public U.S. troops who choose to take a stand, and produce educational literature on why U.S. troops should not deploy to Afghanistan.
Additionally, the campaign will seek to give legal help and a voice to service members being mistreated by their chain of command, who are AWOL, who claim to have experienced sexual harassment or anti-LGBT bigotry, who are battling the mental health system or medical discharge process, or who want to expose war crimes.
"After two deployments to Iraq, I saw the reality of the war, and had the moral epiphany that I could no longer take part in them,? said campaign co-founder Fort Lewis Army Infantry Staff Sergeant Kevin Baker. ?When I received orders for my third combat deployment, I simply said 'no.' I was honorably discharged with full benefits."
Twelve JBLM soldiers have died in combat this year alone, with three in a one week span this June. The base recorded its highest number of suicides ever last year, with 12. Three more have been reported this year.
"The Afghanistan war and the suicide epidemic are historic crises facing U.S. service members. The generals and politicians have proven incapable and unwilling to take any meaningful action to save our lives. This shows that we must take action ourselves," said Baker.

London: An unborn baby girl in the US was detected with an extremely rare cancerous tumour in the mouth, but doctors successfully removed it in one of the world's first such surgeries in the womb.
Leyna Gonzalez was born healthy five months later, The Sun reported.
She is now nearly two years old, and the only sign of cancer is a tiny scar on her mouth.
Her mother Tammy's pregnancy scan at 17 weeks showed Leyna had an aggressive mouth tumour. It looked like the baby was blowing a bubble, the daily said.
Article continues below
Doctors said it was a rare tumour called an oral teratoma, and that there was little chance Leyna would survive.
Surgeons used a laser to cut the tumour from Leyna's lips after pushing a super-fine needle into Tammy's womb for the hour-long operation at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida.
Details of the case has been published in US medical journal Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

New York teachers rally around the public release of teacher evaluations, but without a ranking that they (and Bill Gates) say won't improve education for kids.
By Kevin Loria,?Contributor / June 22, 2012
EnlargeAs school systems around the country start to implement teacher evaluation programs, as both the Obama administration and GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney have advocated, they are all going to have to answer this one key question: How should that information be publicized?
google_ads[0].line2 + '
' +
google_ads[0].line3 + '
New York legislators settled on a solution that could serve as a model for the rest of the country, after complicated negotiations led to passage of a last-minute compromise bill on Thursday that allows evaluations to be made public ? but only without teachers? names, unless a parent requests a report for his or her own child?s teacher.
Tying teacher performance to student test scores has been a central tenant of the Obama administration?s school reforms, but the release of teachers' individual results in Los Angeles and New York ? the first two school districts to make that information public on a large scale ? ?created a real firestorm,? according to Sean Corcoran, an education policy expert and professor at New York University.
That?s because there?s no universally accepted way to evaluate teachers. Critics say evaluation data are often taken out of context, shaming individual teachers without improving classes.
Last time, evaluations that in some cases had more than a 60 percent margin of error led to the New York Post running a story about ?the worst teacher in the city,? based on data that Mr. Corcoran says ?was intended to be used by professional educators to evaluate other professional educators. I don?t think it was set up to be a restaurant grading system,? he says.
That?s why New York legislators decided to try to prevent a repeat of last February?s debacle.
This time, say Corcoran, the plan is ?a decent compromise? that gives parents information about schools but doesn?t put specific individuals? results into the public eye, without additional context.
As other school systems roll out their new teacher evaluation systems ? which vary from state to state, but are being installed all over the country ? New York?s way of releasing teachers' performance statistics could be a model that satisfies most educators and school reformers, he says.
Of course, not everyone will be happy. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an advocate of? full-disclosure, says that making teachers? performance reviews public is the best way to improve accountability. He released a statement saying, ?I am disappointed that this bill falls short of that goal.?
But the decision to grant teachers anonymity in the public release of their evaluations won over a key former foe: the city?s main teachers? union. The United Federation of Teachers, which opposed ?Mayor Bloomberg?s insistence on releasing the misleading and inaccurate Teacher Data Reports" earlier this year, released a statement on Thursday praising the legislature?s ?major steps on behalf of our schools and our children."
The move is also in line with what Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates called for in an opinion essay in the New York Times last February, when New York first released the controversial results. "I am a strong proponent of measuring teachers? effectiveness," he said. "But publicly ranking teachers by name will not help them get better at their jobs or improve student learning. On the contrary, it will make it a lot harder to implement teacher evaluation systems that work."

We are deep into spring already, and baseball and softball seasons are in full swing. Children are practicing and playing on fields all across America. And parents are faced with decision making. It?s off to the sporting goods stores to purchase softball baseball equipment. But which softball baseball equipment do you buy for your little slugger? It?s best to have an idea before you start shopping. Don?t let overzealous sales clerks talk you into baseball softball equipment you don?t need.
Usually it is as easy as what type of child you have. Boys play baseball and girls play softball when they are children. So then it is down to what position they play. Once you figure all this out, you can begin to purchase your child?s softball baseball equipment.
First, let?s examine softball equipment. Softballs are larger versions of baseballs. Softballs range from 11 to 12 inches and contrary to their name are hard like baseballs. They should be provided by the team, but your child will need some of their own to practice. Since softballs are large, it only makes sense that softball gloves and mitts are also larger. Each child will need one of their own. Softball bats are a different story. Softball bats are actually shorter than baseball bats. Softball bats are no longer than 34 inches long. These should be provided by the team also, but once again it?s good to have one for practice.
Baseball & softball bats can be made out of a number of materials. In the beginning, players used baseball & softball bats made from wood. As the sports and technology progressed, baseball & softball bats were made from metal. These are the ones you see being used most. Finally, there are carbon fiber baseball softball bats, but they are a little high tech for youth teams.
So what other softball gear might your child need? Protective helmets for all players are an important safety item of softball equipment. Every batter needs one. Every player needs cleats as well. Here, youth baseball cleats would probably be fine. If your child opts to be a catcher, then they?ll need shin guards and a chest protector and mask as part of their personal softball gear. Perhaps the catcher is the most expensive position to consider.
The final piece of softball equipment needed is softball uniforms. There is a standard to softball uniforms, but they do differ in colors, names and sponsorships. This is where a team can get creative with their softball gear and really make them their own.
So what about the baseball side of softball & baseball equipment? Well, it really isn?t that different from softball equipment. Baseballs are 9 inches and baseball bats are no longer than 42 inches. As discussed previously, there are three materials to choose from in baseball softball bats. Baseball players use gloves and wear helmets. Each child should have one of each, as well as a pair of youth baseball cleats. As with all youth shoes, make sure your child?s youth baseball cleats fit them properly. Catchers in this sport wear shin guards, a chest protector and a mask as well. Baseball uniforms are hard to distinguish from softball uniforms. Again this is an area where teams can show their creativity.
There really isn?t too much mystery when it comes to softball & baseball equipment. The differences between the two sports are few, which makes sense since softball came out of baseball. Baseball equipment can be substituted for softball equipment in a few areas if you have hand me downs. Helmets and youth baseball cleats come to mind. So do baseball softball bats. Both sports can become expensive, but the benefits of youth sports far outweigh the costs. Don?t let finances stand in your way. Look into used softball & baseball equipment, but get those boys and girls out on the field.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX20 ($329.99 direct) is a gorgeous camera. It's slim and its sliding metal faceplate gives it a unique look. It features one of the better touch screens that I've used on any digital camera, and can be used underwater at depths of up to 16 You can drop this 16-megapixel shooter from as high as five feet, but it's not as?rugged as some other tough cameras, and its image quality lags well behind others in its class. If you're looking for a tough-as-nails rugged point-and-shoot that delivers on image quality, our Editors' Choice Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS ($399.99, 4.5 stars) will cost you more, but it's worth it.
Design and Features
The TX20 screams style, and Sony takes advantage of this by offering it in a rainbow of colors. You can opt for a two tone version with a gray body and an orange or green faceplate, or a color-coordinated version in black, blue, or pink. When the camera isn't in use, the metal faceplate covers the lens. Sliding it down turns the camera on and reveals the lens, flash, and stereo mic. Like most tough shooters, the lens is located in the top corner, and doesn't move in or out from the body while zooming. The TX20 is slim for its class, measuring just 2.25 by 3.9 by 0.7 inches and weighing in at 4.7 ounces. You'll be able to slip it into your pocket with ease, especially when compared with the larger, heavier 2.8 by 4.4 by 1.1, 8-ounce?Canon PowerShot D20 ($349.99, 4 stars).?
Physical controls are minimal?there's a standard On/Off button, shutter release, Playback and Movie buttons, and a little nub that serves as a zoom rocker. The touch screen serves as the main control panel, and as such is thankfully quite responsive and customizable. You can select the four shooting controls that are located to the left of the LCD, and there's also an on-board guide that explains all of the camera'a features. The 3-inch display is itself very sharp thanks to a 921k-dot resolution. It's one of the best touch screens that I've seen on a camera?the icons are large enough so that there's no question what you're selecting, and scrolling is smooth and painless.
The 4x zoom lens covers a 25-100mm (35mm equivalent) focal range, which is quite useful in a waterproof camera. When you shoot underwater, objects appear slightly closer to the lens than they actually are, which effectively hurts your wide angle capability?having a lens as wide as 25mm helps to offset that, and gives you a wide field of view for landscape shots when on dry land. Many tough cameras have lenses that start out at 28mm, including the Nikon Coolpix AW100 ($379.95, 4 stars), and although the difference in focal length is only 3mm, the difference in field of view is very noticeable.
The TX20 is rated for use in 16 feet of water, it's dustproof, and can be dropped from heights of up to 5 feet without worry. Despite its high price, the camera is similar to the less-expensive Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS20? ($179.99, 3.5 stars), which matches the toughness ratings of the TX20 and adds the ability to shoot in temperatures as low as 14?F. If you want a tougher camera in this price range, consider the Olympus Tough TG-820 ($299.99, 4 stars)?it can go as deep as 33 feet and is rated to survive drops up to a 6.6 feet.
Performance and Conclusions
Very responsive, the TX20 starts and shoots in about 1.2 seconds, can fire a burst of 10 shots in a second, and records a short 0.2-second shutter lag. It runs circles around the Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS ($399.95, 3.5 stars), which boots and shoots in 2.5 seconds and requires you to wait 0.9-second between photos, but does match the TX20's 0.2-second shutter lag.
I used Imatest to measure the sharpness of the TX20's lens. The results were disappointing; the camera scored 1,346 lines per picture height, well shy of the 1,800 lines that mark a sharp image. What's more concerning is that the camera has excellent center resolution?2,463 lines. Even with a center-weighted testing method, very low performance as you move away from the center of the lens drags down its overall score. It's clear when looking at photos the lens doesn't do well around the edges?objects there look downright blurry. If image quality is high on your list, you won't be pleased?the Canon PowerShot D20 may not be as sleek, but it scores an impressive 1,961 lines on the Imatest sharpness test.
I also tested for image noise, which can sap details from photos and make them appear overly grainy at higher ISO settings. The TX20 kept noise under 1.5 percent through its top ISO setting of 3200, but that's only half the story. Detail starts to disappear as you increase the ISO, which is likely a result of overzealous digital noise reduction coupled with the low sharpness to begin with. I'd recommend keeping the camera set at ISO 400 or below when possible. By the time you hit ISO 800, image detail all but vanishes. The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS does a much better job here, keeping noise below 1.5 percent through ISO 1600, without sacrificing a lot of detail. It also has a leg up thanks to a fast f/2 lens, which lets in about three times as much light as the TX20's f/3.5 lens?more light coming in makes it easier to keep the ISO set low.
Video is recorded in AVCHD format at 1080i60 resolution. The much lower resolution of the footage is more forgiving than 16-megapixel stills, but softness is still apparent in corners. You can connect the camera directly to an HDTV via a standard mini HDMI port. There's also a micro USB connector which serves double duty; you can use it to connect the camera to your computer, or to plug it directly into a wall using the included AC adapter. As there's no battery charger included, you'll have to recharge the battery via this port. Standard SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards are supported, as well as Sony Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo, Memory Stick Duo, and Memory Stick PRO Duo media.
Sony clearly put a lot of care put into the design of the Cyber-shot DSC-TX20. The slim shooter is attractive, the touch-screen interface is top-notch,?and the sliding metal faceplate manages to protect the lens and give the camera a unique look. Unfortunately, the compromises necessary to squeeze a 4x zoom lens into a 0.7-inch body result in images that, while sharp in the center, soften to the point of blurriness as you move towards the edges of the frame. You'll be better off spending your money on a more capable camera like the Olympus Tough TG-820, Canon PowerShot D20, or our Editors' Choice Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS?all of which outperform the TX20 on image quality and toughness.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? A coalition government could be formed by mid-Wednesday in Greece, the head of the country's socialist party said Tuesday, easing the nation from political limbo as it struggles to deal with a financial crisis that has affected Europe's economy and markets around the world.
Evangelos Venizelos, whose PASOK party came third in Sunday's elections, said the socialists "will support this government sincerely and will participate in it in the most beneficial way in order to make it effective and credible."
At the core of any administration would be Antonis Samaras' conservative New Democracy party, which came first in Sunday's vote and won 129 of Parliament's 300 seats ? short of the 151 needed to govern alone.
The radical left Syriza party, which finished in second place, with 71 seats, has refused to join any government that will implement the terms of Greece's international bailout, under which the country has received billions of euros in rescue loans in return for deeply unpopular spending cuts and tax hikes.
Venizelos, who handled Greece's negotiations with its international creditors for several months last year as finance minister, said that due to Syriza's stance, the government would have the support of the election winner, PASOK and the small Democratic Left party of Fotis Kouvelis, which won 17 seats.
"With Syriza's refusal, the only practical solution now is the creation of a government with the support of New Democracy, PASOK, and the Democratic Left," he said after several hours of negotiations. "I repeat that this government must be formed as soon as possible. As things stand now, this can be achieved by mid-day tomorrow."
PASOK will convene its deputies Wednesday morning to define exactly how the party will participate, he said.
Although numerically Samaras could form a government with just PASOK, which has 33 seats, both have sought a broader alliance that would be seen as potentially more stable and better able to weather the continuing storm of austerity measures taken in return for Greece's rescue loans.
Such a government would broadly fulfill Greece's pledges to its bailout creditors for further cutbacks and reforms, keeping the country within Europe's joint currency. Otherwise, Greece would run out of cash and the continent could plunge deeper into a financial nightmare with global repercussions.
The austerity measures have left Greece struggling through its fifth year of a deep recession, with unemployment spiraling to 22 percent and tens of thousands of businesses shutting down.
Fury over the cuts that have seen salaries and pensions slashed in the public sector propelled Syriza, led by 37-year-old Alexis Tsipras, from 4.6 percent in 2009 to nearly 27 percent in Sunday's election and gave anti-austerity parties more than 50 percent in total.
Tsipras had campaigned on a strong anti-bailout ticket, vowing to scrap the country's pledges and play tough with creditors ? Greece's European partners and the International Monetary Fund.
With public anger palpable, both Venizelos and Samaras say they will seek changes to some of the terms in Greece's bailout deals, on which the country has depended since May 2010. But they have pledged to respect the commitments for further austerity and reform.
They are pressing for an extension of at least two years in the deadline, which would alleviate the immediate impact of new cutbacks and is seen as a likely concession by creditors. The Democratic Left is anti-austerity in principle, but has insisted that its main priority is keeping Greece in the Eurozone.
"The most important issue is not the government's composition, but the national negotiating team that will strive to achieve the best possible revision of the loan agreement so that we can keep all the positives and to counter the recession and unemployment and to bring positive growth and jobs," Venizelos said.
Austrian Finance Minister Maria Fekter said Tuesday that any changes to the bailout deal would be "an adaptation of a pragmatic nature" after debt inspectors from major creditors visit Athens.
Separately, a European Union official said the terms of Greece's bailout will be renegotiated because worsening economic conditions have made the old agreement an "illusion."
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing policy, said the goals of the agreement would still be to reduce Greece's debt and reform its economy to make it competitive. But how they are achieved would be up for discussion, the official said.
Samaras' three-day mandate to form a government expires Wednesday night. If it fails, Syriza would get a chance to form a government, followed by the Socialists. But Tsipras has said he will pass on the mandate and not even try to form a government. Venizelos has advocated circumventing the entire process and proceeding straight to a meeting of party leaders under President Karolos Papoulias.
Setting apart their bitter rivalry stemming from four decades of what was effectively a two-party system, New Democracy and PASOK took part in a brief coalition government earlier this year.

So to get to the heart of the matter, whether Microsoft Corp. /quotes/zigman/20493/quotes/nls/msft MSFT +2.88% ?is borrowing liberally from others or seeding soil with its new tablet, what the company is doing now is just scratching the surface of a new market.
With the Surface, its first branded entry into the tablet sector, Microsoft is looking to make a splash in a crowded pool already dominated by Apple Inc. /quotes/zigman/68270/quotes/nls/aapl AAPL +0.28% and its iPad, and Google Inc. /quotes/zigman/93888/quotes/nls/goog GOOG +1.87% ?and the various devices that run on its Android operating system.
/quotes/zigman/20493/quotes/nls/msft MSFT 30.70, +0.86, +2.88%?It is essential the tablet is properly marketed and shows its full potential if it has any hope of displacing Apple?s iPad in certain segments,? said David McQueen, principal analysts with Informa Telecoms & Media.
As if that weren?t enough of a challenge, Microsoft, in setting off alone with a tablet, is also going to be competing against partners such as Hewlett-Packard Co. /quotes/zigman/229301/quotes/nls/hpq HPQ -1.14% ?and Dell Inc. /quotes/zigman/27952/quotes/nls/dell DELL -1.93% , which have their own tablets in the works running Microsoft?s upcoming Windows 8 operating system.
Shaw Wu of Sterne Agee said the launch of the Surface shows a different side of Microsoft, one that could be for both good and ill. ?On the positive [side], Microsoft is being more proactive in addressing the mobile-device market where it has had little traction,? he wrote in a research note. ?On the negative, this will be cannibalistic [with] Windows partners.?
Of course, how much of rivals? business the Surface will eat won?t be known for several months. But it might be a case of better-the-devil-you-know for Microsoft?s partners ? which given their long history of running Windows on their devices, are expected to be loath to ditch it for Google?s Chrome OS or anything else.

Rick Sherlund of Nomura Research said Microsoft will be collaborating with partners and encouraging them to ?prime the pump? around the upcoming Windows 8 launch, but those other parties ?will necessarily need to deliver competing solutions, and we think Microsoft has set a high bar for comparisons.?
At London-based Analysys Mason, principal analyst Ronan de Renesse said the Surface appears to be ?the best Windows-based mobile attempt so far,? and expects it to sell in decent numbers ?as long as it delivers its promises and is priced correctly.?
But de Renesse added that at the end of the day, the Surface is primarily a showcase for the Windows 8 operating system. Also, Microsoft won?t be able to sustain its mobile strategy if it keeps licensing Windows for the tablets of partners that are also rivals, he commented. ?The big question is if Surface becomes as successful as the iPad, will Microsoft choose to stop licensing Windows on tablets??
Microsoft is taking a page out of Apple's playbook with its first tablet computer. Ian Sherr reports.
The Surface comes as Microsoft has posted a mixed track record for its hardware efforts. Indeed, it?s done very well with peripherals like computer mice and keyboards, and the Xbox videogame console remains a hit with gamers. Yet the company also has failed to ignite and inspire, as seen with its Zune music player and the Kin smartphone.
So far, no single tablet has matched the success of the iPad. For Microsoft to pull away from the surface of the tablet market, it will have get many things right, and maybe break a few more rules along the way.
