Fired colleague of UBS rogue trader Adoboli opens betting site

LONDON (Reuters) - A former senior trader at UBS, sacked for failing to prevent colleague Kweku Adoboli from perpetrating the biggest fraud in British history, has set up a gambling website.

In a decision likely to be seized upon by critics who say traders have often made casino-style bets, John Hughes started his gambling firm even though his website said his old job had "removed all sense of optimism from his character".

Adoboli, his former subordinate now serving seven years in jail for running up losses of $2.3 billion, argued during his trial that his own behavior was the result of a risky trading culture encouraged by senior colleagues, and his lawyers alleged that Hughes had played a major role in "off-book" trading.

Hughes admitted he had known of Adoboli's scheme to hide his giant losses and that he had booked several fictitious trades himself, but denied knowledge of some of Adoboli's biggest multi-billion dollar trades.

Hughes said he had chosen to call his new gambling website 'BetsofMates', a play on the expression "Best of Mates".

That may grate with Adoboli who complained that his colleagues, including Hughes, had "sold me down the river" after a meeting at which he said it was decided he alone would carry the can for the huge losses.

Hughes and the others said they had no memory of such a meeting.

"We're not a standard bookie," Hughes said of his new website, which enables users to play against each other in leagues, with each player placing bets of between two and 200 pounds.

"We facilitate competition. The emphasis is a lot more on competition than yield enhancement," he told Reuters on Thursday.

The former senior trader on the Exchange Traded Funds desk at UBS in London said Adoboli's conviction was "just incredibly sad". He declined to comment further.

Despite a large salary and bonus, Adoboli was himself an avid gambler and lost 123,000 pounds ($200,000) on spread-betting in the year before his arrest.

One prosecutor accused him of being addicted to gambling to which Adoboli countered that spread-betting was common among City traders "like a taxi driver driving his own taxi home".

Hughes' profile on his new firm's website says that "seven years in the City (had) removed all sense of optimism from his character, and made him absurdly superstitious."

He told Reuters such feelings had arisen "sitting there watching the markets for seven years and watching different news hit the tapes and obviously the last seven years haven't been the easiest in the financial markets."

Britain's Gambling Commission granted a license to his pool betting company 'Bets of Mates Limited', which is registered to an East London address, in September 2012, two months before Adoboli was convicted.

CSN: After this turkey, stick a fork in the Jets

November 23, 2012, 3:00 am

???
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Jets starting quarterback ran into an offensive lineman?s ass with his face.
?
And fumbled. And that fumble was returned for a touchdown. On national television. In prime time.
?
And the Jets explanation, supplied by their head coach?
?
?That?s probably the first mistake he?s made giving a handoff all season . . . Again, guys, it?s a one-in-a-zillion play. I?m not sure what happened on it, but that?s the reality of the play. In my opinion, it?s the first time that he?s made that mistake all season.?
?
So the starting quarterback and former fifth overall pick was due to run face-first into an ass. He was on borrowed time. We all knew it was coming
?
Well, I guess that?s owning it.
?
This is where the Jets are. This is what they?ve become. A cornucopia of absurd. Given the tenor of the Rex Ryan Era in New York, we could have imagined his End of Days on the Jets sideline would be spectacular, but this was too, too much.
?
A 49-19 loss to the Patriots in which the Patriots scored 35 second-quarter points and 21 points in 52 seconds.
?
In less than a minute, the Jets did things the Patriots don?t do in five seasons. And if any one of those things happened on Bill Belichick?s watch, you can be pretty sure he wouldn?t be saying, ?Guys, we?ve all seen quarterbacks smash their faces off the guard?s hindquarters and drop the ball, haven?t we? What?s the big deal? Guys still are giving it every ounce. They?re bleeding for me. And I?m . . . I?m bleeding for them.?
?
No. One thinks not.
?
After this win that lifted the Patriots record to 8-3, I could have gone to hear what they had to say. But the Jets have an irresistible pull. Like a freak show. You know you?re going to feel bad looking at it, but something makes you want to see just how bizarre it really is.
?
?Step right up, step inside, you won?t believe your ears or your eyes as the Amazing Shrinking Coach defines his quarterback?s night.?
?
?Mark . . . he had a 94 quarterback rating,? said Ryan. ?I thought Mark threw the ball well.?
?
Right into the arms of Patriots safety Steve Gregory in the first quarter to snuff a would-be Jets scoring drive. Just the sixth red-zone turnover of the season for Sanchez.
?
Ryan defends Sanchez by saying he?s not the sole reason the Jets are 4-7. And he?s not. It?s the program. It?s the lip service offered week-in, week-out in which the Jets ?own? their mistakes, pledge to stop making them, promise to ?give it their all,? and then play rudderless football.
?
On the Patriots? first touchdown, the Jets had three defenders in the end zone covering two Patriots receivers on a play that started at the New York 3-yard line. Two of the defenders went to one receiver, another covered air and Wes Welker scored without a defender in arm?s reach.
?
On the Patriots? second touchdown, a pitch to the flat to Shane Vereen that turned into an 83-yard touchdown . . . we?ll let Antonio Cromartie explain it.
?
?Some calls we got into, they knew what coverage we were in,? he explained. ?Like on the wheel route, our inside linebacker [Bart Scott] was supposed to take that but it?s hard for him to take that when he?s too far inside and the running back slides out. Some of the calls that we got into put a hardship on us. . . . We shoulda gone for another scheme and I shoulda put a safety on the wheel and put Bart on the inside guy on the curl route.?
?
It was Cromartie, Eric Smith and Scott involved in that play. That?s 25 years of NFL experience between them.
?
But, well, hindsight?s 20-20 and they?ll do better next time.
?
There?s a big whiteboard in the hallway leading to the Jets locker room.
?
On it were these words.
?
Focus
Do Your Job ?Execute?
One Play At a Time
Definition
Details
Destruction
Domination
?
The only two things satisfied on that list were the last two and they were applied by the Patriots.
?
The Jets have been non-competitive in several games this season. 27-10 loss to the Steelers. 34-0 against the Niners. 30-9 against the Dolphins. 28-7 against the Seahawks. And Thursday night.
?
?We?re about as wounded as we can possibly be, but we?re not dead,? said Ryan.
?
(IT?S JUST A FLESH WOUND!)
?
?I can tell you this: we will give everything we have, every ounce of energy we have to get this thing going. That?s from a coaching standpoint as well as the players. If not, then we?ll make adjustments.?
?
It?s getting a little late for ?if, then.? At some point, someone?s going to pry Woody Johnson?s attention away from his yo-yo and point out that his billion-dollar investment is rotting.
?
And then? One has to figure an uncomfortable housecleaning will ensue.
?
I asked Ryan if he expects to be coaching the Jets in 2013.
?
?I do,? he answered. ?I think our team will play a heck of a lot better and I don?t believe anybody will ask that question by the time the year?s over.?
?
They may not be asking it because the answer may be very clear by then.

Macy's parade aims to be 'beacon of hope'

Carlo Allegri / Reuters

A balloon in the shape of Papa Smurf is held down by netting as it gets inflated with helium ahead of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in New York on Wednesday.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 6:04 a.m. ET: NEW YORK ??Giant helium balloons rose above the treetops along New York's Central Park on Wednesday ahead of the 86th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the largest public event so far in a city still recovering from superstorm Sandy.

The parade that typically draws 3.5 million spectators and 50 million television viewers will follow a new route this year, skipping Times Square entirely ??to the chagrin of business owners there.

Instead, the procession will head down Sixth Avenue, before culminating at Macy's flagship store on 34th Street.

NBC's Chris Clackum reports on how this year's drought will affect the price of Thanksgiving dinner.

"As it has during turbulent times in our history, we hope the Macy's Parade serves as a beacon of hope for all who tune in and gather with friends and family to give thanks this season, as they continue to heal from the devastating aftermath of Superstorm Sandy," Amy Kule, the parade's executive producer, said in a statement.

Thanking out loud: Why you're grateful this year

The parade will feature 16 giant character balloons, including a 60-foot-tall Kermit the Frog, as well as 28 floats, 1,600 cheerleaders and dancers, 11 marching bands, and someone who looks a lot like Santa Claus.

From poor weather conditions in the Midwest to a worker protest at LAX, travel slowdowns and higher rental car costs have made Thanksgiving travel anything but smooth sailing. NBC's Ron Mott reports.

Celebrities including Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Isaak, Carly Rae Jepsen and the Muppets are due to appear or perform.

Macy's has said it will be providing transport and seats for some 5,000 people affected by Sandy, which last month inundated lower Manhattan with seawater, rearranged the New Jersey shore and Long Island, and tore up neighborhoods in far-flung areas of New York's outer boroughs.

Thousands of Sandy victims still displaced

At least 132 people died in the United States and Canada as a result of the storm.

"Coming here is a good distraction," said Chris Tamis, who along with his wife and two teenage kids was in New York to watch balloons being inflated for the parade.

See images of the giant balloons and festivities at the 86th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

"A lot of people are coming to get away from it," said Tamis, who only recently got power back in his home in Smithtown, New York.

Surviving the family holiday meal and that extra helping of parenting advice

On Wednesday, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that the city, in partnership with local community organizations and businesses, was coordinating 26,500 Thanksgiving meals for people hardest hit by the storm.?

Other cities planned to have showy marching bands, cartoon character balloons and musical extravaganzas as well. Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit were among the big cities hosting parades.

Black Friday psychology: Inside the minds of shoppers

For some, the once-sacrosanct harvest feast now starts the holiday shopping season ? and store openings keep getting earlier. Black Friday now starts on Thanksgiving day itself at many national stores and some shoppers eagerly race from their dinner tables to line up for bargains, delaying their second helpings until they've purchased the latest toys or electronic devices.

President Obama, with his daughters by his side, talks about less fortunate Americans this Thanksgiving, then pardons "Cobbler" and "Gobbler," two turkeys from Virginia.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

The Benefits of Board Games - Needham, MA Patch

I haven?t always liked board games but now that I am older and wiser I know it is because my three older brothers always been the pants off me at most any game we played. My Dad was about the only one who ?let? me win from time to time. Now that I have kids we have really gotten into the spirit of board games, I look for games that teach them something no matter how small. Recently I discovered that with a little coaxing most any board game can be a learning experience for kids.

Very quickly I saw how board games helped both kids learn about taking turns. My youngest was about three when we started playing after dinner each night and he wanted to go first all of the time. We told him if he wanted to play we would rotate who goes first. Took a little while for him to realize we weren?t kidding but soon enough he would be the one to remind us. It was about this time that my older child was struggling with sportsmanship. In other words, she was a sore loser. Oh how she hated to lose. Still isn?t much of a fan, but at least she has some grace when she does lose. Board games were a great foray into the unwritten social rules of board games or games of any sort for that matter. When one of us would win we would fuss over them and cheer and dance about. We pretty much ignored any pouting going on and just focused on the person who won. Now, from anywhere in the house I can always tell when a game is over because I hear loud cheering and laughing all around.

Another big board game appeal in our house was teaching impulse control, especially for my son. He loves to play but sitting still wasn?t his thing. He would climb on Dad, hop around on all fours and roll around the room like a little puppy dog. It was distracting and frankly, annoying. A new rule soon followed that while we don?t expect you (especially our son, a boy after all) to sit still as a statue, we do expect you to stay reasonably calm?.unless you win! It was only after my son?s parent-teacher conference that I realized this little rule helped him at circle time when sitting still for a longer than usually time was expected.

But I think my board game ?ah ha? moment came when we started playing games like Connect Four and Chess. We hadn?t focused much on the strategy behind winning games in the past but as the kids got older and they started wondering how Mom and Dad won so often we clued them in on it. I took the lead and asked Dad, ?how?d ya do that?? and he would explain his move to me. Or I would inquire, ?why did you put your pawn there?? and watch as the kids lapped up the information on how to win. Soon we had the kids explaining their moves and it wasn?t soon after that we didn?t have to ?let? them win at all.

So play board games for the sheer fun of it all but also, every once in a while challenge your kids with questions about why they made a particular move, how they hope to win and if they think they can play better next time. I am secure enough with myself to move past the days of ?letting? my first grader win and advance to hoping she does win and be in awe of how she did it!

Holiday Toy List for Infants | Special Education & IEP Advisor

Shopping season for the holidays is approaching fast.? Parents (and my own family members and friends) keep asking, what are the best toys to give to their child.? When choosing toys for children it is best to see what a child is currently capable of doing and what skills are emerging rather than using strict age guidelines.? Below you will find a few great toys for infants in different developmental stages over their first year.? Each toy has characteristics to match a child?s developmental stage of physical, intellectual, and/or social development.

During the first few months, a child?s ?purpose? in play is all about sensation ? to see, hear, touch, smell, and mouth.? An infant?s motor skills include following objects with their eyes, responding to sounds by turning their head, or grasping an object when put into their hand.? They are interested in people?s faces and voices.? Visual acuity is in the early stages of development and studies show that newborns prefer high contrasting colors (black & white patterns) but it is good to expose them to more subtle objects, like your face and eyes and their own little hands and feet.? Babies are born with a more developed sense of hearing versus sight.? They respond to familiar voices and are soothed by rhythmic sounds that mimic sounds they were exposed to in the womb, like a mother?s heart beat.? A newborn?s sense of touch is especially developed at birth, particularly around the mouth. As adults, we notice that babies put almost everything in their mouths.? This oral seeking behavior is not necessarily an infant?s response to teething, it is often the baby?s way of exploring or a means to self soothe.

Three great toys for this early infancy stage are:

?

Mirrors such as the Sassy Crib and Floor Mirror

Board books full of high contrast patterns like Look, Look! by Peter Linenthal

Manhattan Toys make a few great toys that are easy for small hands to grasp such as the Whoozit, which also has high contrasting patterns, little noise makers, and different fabric textures.

By four to six months more gross motor skills begin to develop like propping themselves up on their arms, placing objects in their mouth, reaching to grab objects, kicking their legs, and sitting upright.

There are a variety of activity mats out there, such as ones made by Baby Einstein, that are great for tummy time and placing toys on the arcs for the baby to reach for or kick when lying on their back. The positioning of the hanging objects can be adjusted depending on how you want to stimulate these developing motor skills.

Sophie la Girafe is a big crowd pleaser!? She is easy to hold onto, safe to chew, visually stimulating with her dark contrasting spots, has a distinct sweet smell, and squeaks when squeezed.

While seeking out sensations will continue to guide play throughout infancy, within a few months an infant is stimulated by starting to learn the relationship between an action and it?s effect.? There are many ?cause-effect? toys that will stimulate motor and intellectual skills.? As infants become more physically active you will begin to see higher level gross motor skills develop like sitting with better balance and maybe reaching outside of their base of support, pushing up onto their hands and knees and starting to crawl, pulling to stand, cruising furniture, and walking. Their fine motor and object manipulation skills become more refined, as they move on from earlier stages of mouthing, shaking, and swiping at toys to using their fingers to poke at, push, or pick up small objects.? Socially, they start to interact more meaningfully, show humor by laughing and in anticipation, and initiate play activities (show and give objects to adult).

Here is a wider variety of toys to meet an infant?s developing skills at these later infancy stages:

?

Toy Smith?s Wiggly Giggly Ball

Playskool Busy Poppin? Pals

Playskool Busy Ball Popper

Fisher Price Star Stacker is an all time favorite of mine for new independent sitters.

V-Tech?s Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker this activity center grows with your child from sitting to standing and taking his or her first steps.

?

Blocks are a simple and fantastic toy for all these stages of development.? Beyond developing motor skills and eye-hand coordination to stack them, they have a cause-effect and natural social component where you build and baby knocks down causing lots of reactions and laughs!

Two suggested options for infant block play are:

B. One Two Squeeze Blocks? and IQ Baby Knock-Knock Blocks

There are so many great toys out there and these are just a few of my favorites based on all my years working with infants?and being an Aunt that loves to buy great gifts!

Enjoy & happy shopping!

When it really comes down to it?when the chips are down and the lights are off?are we naturally good? That is, are we predisposed to act cooperatively, to help others even when it costs us? Or are we, in our hearts, selfish creatures?

This fundamental question about human nature has long provided fodder for discussion. Augustine?s doctrine of original sin proclaimed that all people were born broken and selfish, saved only through the power of divine intervention. Hobbes, too, argued that humans were savagely self-centered; however, he held that salvation came not through the divine, but through the social contract of civil law. On the other hand, philosophers such as Rousseau argued that people were born good, instinctively concerned with the welfare of others. More recently, these questions about human nature?selfishness and cooperation, defection and collaboration?have been brought to the public eye by game shows such as Survivor and the UK?s Golden Balls, which test the balance between selfishness and cooperation by pitting the strength of interpersonal bonds against the desire for large sums of money.

But even the most compelling televised collisions between selfishness and cooperation provide nothing but anecdotal evidence. And even the most eloquent philosophical arguments mean noting without empirical data.

A new set of studies provides compelling data allowing us to analyze human nature not through a philosopher?s kaleidoscope or a TV producer?s camera, but through the clear lens of science. These studies were carried out by a diverse group of researchers from Harvard and Yale?a developmental psychologist with a background in evolutionary game theory, a moral philosopher-turned-psychologist, and a biologist-cum-mathematician?interested in the same essential question: whether our automatic impulse?our first instinct?is to act selfishly or cooperatively.

This focus on first instincts stems from the dual process framework of decision-making, which explains decisions (and behavior) in terms of two mechanisms: intuition and reflection. Intuition is often automatic and effortless, leading to actions that occur without insight into the reasons behind them. Reflection, on the other hand, is all about conscious thought?identifying possible behaviors, weighing the costs and benefits of likely outcomes, and rationally deciding on a course of action. With this dual process framework in mind, we can boil the complexities of basic human nature down to a simple question: which behavior?selfishness or cooperation?is intuitive, and which is the product of rational reflection? In other words, do we cooperate when we overcome our intuitive selfishness with rational self-control, or do we act selfishly when we override our intuitive cooperative impulses with rational self-interest?

To answer this question, the researchers first took advantage of a reliable difference between intuition and reflection: intuitive processes operate quickly, whereas reflective processes operate relatively slowly. Whichever behavioral tendency?selfishness or cooperation?predominates when people act quickly is likely to be the intuitive response; it is the response most likely to be aligned with basic human nature.

GiveCorps: crowdfunding meets charitable giving at this Charles ...

At 49, Jamie McDonald describes herself as ?not your typical, 25-year-old entrepreneur,? although she feels ?about 20-something.?

McDonald is the co-founder of GiveCorps, the Charles Village-based startup that uses the crowdfunding model of Kickstarter and applies it to the world of charitable giving. Baltimore-area nonprofits upload specific projects that need funding?new tools for the Baltimore ToolBank, say, or assembling Thanksgiving meals for families?along with total amount of cash needed to the GiveCorps site, and site visitors then donate directly to projects instead of sending a check to a nonprofit?s general fund.

The foray into entrepreneurship started early for McDonald, a Center City, Philadelphia native. At age 9, she ran Tiny Tots Tumbling Class, teaching tumbling lessons to the children of parents she met through the local YMCA, where her mother worked as the receptionist. McDonald graduated from what is today Philadelphia University, spent graduate school at Cornell University studying international development, and then came to Baltimore in 1986 by way of Alex Brown, when the investment bank was just 2,300 people big, she says, before it came under the umbrella of Deutsche Bank in 1999.

In 2003, McDonald retired from her job as a managing director at Deutsche Bank and went to work volunteering at the Center for Urban Families in the Mondawmin neighborhood. Her job was to fundraise $8 million dollars, an experience that, while successful, showed her how difficult it was to cobble together funds from multiple sources.

GiveCorps co-founder Jamie McDonald, with VP of merchant and nonprofit relationships, Peter Jackson.

Enter GiveCorps, founded July 2011. In a little more than a year, more than 200 nonprofits have used GiveCorps to raise money from more than 3,000 Baltimoreans. The concept of the business, said McDonald, is something that ?really resonated.?

?You don?t have to be rich to be a philanthropist,? she said.

Donors can make small donations, even of just $1. Nonprofits pay between four percent and seven percent of the money they raise to be listed on GiveCorps, and merchant-partners?who offer Groupon-style deals to donors??pay a bit,? McDonald said, to be featured. Projects are promoted by GiveCorps through an e-mail list of subscribers. The company is still funded primarily through venture capital funding.

As many as 7,000 people each day view projects listed on GiveCorps. In the last month, McDonald and her team of seven staffers have begun rolling out new features on a redesigned GiveCorps website, part of a platform change that has been six months in the making.

  • GiveAccount, the equivalent of an ?iTunes or Starbucks card for giving,? McDonald said, allows donors to determine how much money to set aside each month specifically for charitable donations.
  • The GiveVault tracks a user?s donations and organizes them in a pledge balance. Through the vault, users can also print out tax receipts for each project they?ve donated to, as well as download coupons earned from merchant-partners.
  • Both the GiveAccount and GiveVault are functions of the new profiles users can create on GiveCorps? website, much like the profile a new user to Facebook would make. On their profiles, people can list their giving ?passions?: education, environment, community development, animals and so on.
  • Donors can now create their own personal fundraising projects through the site, raising funds for a specific nonprofit listed on GiveCorps.
  • GiveCards, gifts people can give one another, are electronic credits that can be donated to a nonprofit on the site.

Much of these changes were made to ?tailor things for the donor,? said McDonald, by providing a set of tools by which people can ?manage their giving life in a way they?d manage other parts of their financial life.?

On the horizon is a national expansion. Right now, GiveCorps is ?building up a national prototype? of a site that includes 16 cities with between 10 and 12 nonprofits in each city, McDonald said. Other philanthropic-giving sites?are ?nonprofit-centric,? she said. The trick, according to McDonald, is to find out ?whether the market is ready for this kind of donor-centric platform.?

On Nov. 27, GiveCorps and the nonprofits on its site will participate in #GivingTuesday, a national movement to make the Tuesday after Thanksgiving the kick-off to the holiday giving season, by offering matching funds on donations made through the GiveCorps site. A group of Baltimore businesses have created the pool of matching funds, and GiveCorps? merchant-partners will offer rewards to all donors who contribute to a nonprofit?s fundraising campaign on Nov. 27.

Chicago's Real Estate Forum Probes Multifamily's Present, Future ...

Nov. 12, 2012

L-R: Lee Kiser, principal of Kiser Group; Steve Fifield, chairman and CEO of Fifield Cos.; Collete English Dixon, principal ? Transactions for Prudential Real Estate Investors; Robert Buford, president and CEO of Planned Realty Group; Ari Golson, principal and founding member of The Wolcott Group LLC; Ron DeVries, vice president at Appraisal Research Counselors; and Chris Irwin, senior vice president of Retail Sales & Leasing at Jameson Commercial.

By Jeffrey Steele, Contributing Writer

Chicago??Politeness is not a part of the script.?

With those words from moderator Lee Kiser, co-founder of Chicago commercial real estate brokerage Kiser Group, a lively, sometimes scrappy panel discussion was initiated last Thursday night in Chicago. The occasion was the 2012 edition of the Lincoln Park Builders-sponsored Real Estate Forum, Chicago?s premier networking, educational and social event for the real estate community.

Assembled around Kiser at the historic Germania Club on the city?s near-north side was a panel comprised of Chicago?s leading real estate experts. Those experts wasted little time launching into a spirited discussion of the issues of concern to developers and owners of multifamily properties in the Windy City.

Among key points receiving a measure of unanimity were these.

Robert Buford, co-founder of Planned Realty Group, whose portfolio includes 25 mid-rise and high-rise apartment buildings and 3,000 apartments, noted that for investors and operators like himself, the issues are no different today than they have ever been.

?They are where to buy, how much to pay, is it time to rehab and upgrade, and how much higher can rents go before renters become buyers?? Buford said. ?Explore those issues and you can?t help but improve return on investment.?

Noting the top end of the Chicago market has seen rent increases of more than 8 percent in the last year, Ron DeVries, vice president with appraisal and consulting firm Appraisal Research Counselors, said the big question is what will happen in 2013 and 2014, when an average of 2,000 units will be added each year. ?We think rents will hold pretty well next year,? he said, noting there?s not as much certainty about where rents will head in 2014.

Steven Fifield, founder of Fifield Companies, for 30 years among the most prolific and successful of Chicago office and residential developers, noted his company will deliver 496 units in spring, and 400 to 500 units yearly to 2015 and beyond.

Companies seeking the best and brightest talent will prefer the city of Chicago, and that talent has a preference for living and playing close to work, he said. Forecasting job growth downtown in 2014 and 2015, he added, ?I predict a shortage of apartments during that same time will drive some renters back into nearby neighborhoods like West Loop, West Tower, Bucktown and Lakeview.?

Adjusting DeVries? estimate upward, he added he and other developers will deliver 2,500 units yearly in 2013 and 2014, and all will be absorbed by 2015.

Collete English Dixon, principal, transactions, with Prudential Real Estate Investors, noted that the hottest rental markets are those coastal metros she termed the ?Sexy Six,? Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C., Miami, Seattle and San Francisco. ?But Chicago?s the third largest MSA in the country and will always be on investors? lists,? she added. ?There will be interest because we?re the biggest, boldest, baddest place in the Midwest.?

She added that in many areas of the country, it?s becoming more expensive to rent than to buy. In Chicago, she said, that threshold hasn?t yet been crossed, but added, ?Eventually, echo boomers are going to want a place to own.?

Buford seemed to speak for most of the panelists when he concluded: ?I think we have more upside before renters become buyers.?

Any SIT Students With A Keen Interest In Civic Affairs? ? 'Credo Quia ...

Posted: November 12, 2012 in Uncategorized

Here?s your chance:

Here?s your opportunity to have morning tea and a chat with the Honourable Mayor Tim Shadbolt in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
When: This Wednesday, 14th November at 10.00am
Where: SIT Cafe, main campus
What: Free tea/coffee and biscuits provided
These visits will continue from February next year, on the the 2nd Wednesday of each month, and we will alternate locations between main campus and SIT Downtown campus.

Not sure what to ask him? ? Here?s some starters:

  1. When are you going to do that rates review that was due before June this year?
  2. How come you have had so many personal assistants in such a short period of time?
  3. How many people are allowed to drive your car?
  4. What is the point of a sister city relationship with Suqian when SIT already has relationships throughout China?? What does the city have to offer?
  5. Will you freely release your credit card statements for the last 12 months?
  6. What measurable criteria were used to spend oodles of money on a film premiere?
  7. How much has the city council spent on food and alcohol in the last 12 months?
  8. Norman Elder?

Just a few starters.? Just because I hate people who waste my money being given a free ride in a ?relaxed and friendly? atmosphere.

PS Funny how he does this for people who are unlikely to vote.? Maybe it?s just getting an audience that might not badger him about the big issues, like running the city.

PPS Um, he?s not the Honourable mayor, BTW ? he?s not a judge of the High Court or above, nor was he a Cabinet Minister, Governor General or Speaker 0f the House before 2010.? He?s just plain old Mayor.

GE Oil & Gas Showcases at ADIPEC 2012, UAE>> LNG World News

GE Oil & Gas Showcases at ADIPEC 2012

GE Oil & Gas is highlighting a full range of its advanced technology products and services at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC), the largest event for the industry in the Middle East to be attended by representatives from over 58 countries.

GE?s technology showcase will feature offerings from across the entire oil and gas business, including drilling & surface, global services, measurement & control, pipeline inspection services, subsea systems and turbomachinery. The advanced technologies highlighted by GE underline the company?s commitment to further strengthen its partnerships in the oil & gas sector of the region by promoting operational efficiencies and sustainable growth.

Rami Qasem, Chief Executive Officer for GE Oil & Gas in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, said: ?Continuing to grow its capabilities in the region, GE Oil & Gas is a leader in localization initiatives that meet the customers? needs in the Middle East. Our strategy in the region is to be a growth partner for the energy infrastructure development by understanding the needs of our customers? in the public and private sectors, and supporting them to meet their business goals. Focused on driving greater efficiency and the environmentally-responsible deployment of oil & gas reserves, we are highlighting our advanced technologies at ADIPEC, a key event that brings together prominent industry stakeholders.?

The technologies displayed by GE at ADIPEC range from advanced turbomachinery products within the gas-to-liquid, natural gas liquefaction and gas reinjection sectors to advanced monitoring and diagnostic capabilities. These innovative solutions confirm GE Oil & Gas? commitment to address today?s environmental challenges while driving economic growth.

This is particularly important for a region like the Middle East that is seeking to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions while at the same time increasing the productivity of its oil and gas industry. Products like the ORegen waste heat recovery system that enables a gas turbine to produce extra power without any additional emissions or fuel consumption and no water use, or the emissions-reducing Integrated Compressor Line technology support these objectives. Both solutions received GE?s ecomagination qualification that is awarded to products that simultaneously increase productivity and operational efficiency while reducing the environmental footprint.

GE Oil & Gas technology and innovation leadership is particularly significant in the region in relation to the LNG industry, which is growing in importance worldwide and is driven by both economic and environmental benefits. This trend plays to the strength of GE Oil & Gas? offerings that range from large capacity liquefaction compressor trains to Micro LNG plants. LNG is a suitable substitute to diesel for powering remote locations both for industrial and residential use. LNG represents a cleaner alternative to diesel for trucks and the transportation industry, enabling overall reductions in combustion emissions up to 25 percent and in costs up to 35-40 percent.

To help oil and gas pipeline operators improve their ability to detect coincident flaws that potentially could lead to costly pipeline failures, PII Pipeline Solutions, GE Oil & Gas and Al Shaheen joint venture, recently added its Coincident Feature Assessment Service technology to its suite of inspection software. The service helps customers easily identify coincident cracks, dents, corrosion and other anomalies across multiple in-line inspection runs.

GE Oil & Gas continues to expand its presence in the Middle East. An example is the recently expanded Gulf Turbine Services facility in Abu Dhabi, which has doubled its work force to 100 people and offers enhanced levels of service for the region?s energy industry. GE has also expanded the GE Manufacturing Technology Center, in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, and supports customers in leadership development through the acclaimed Oil & Gas University, which has set up an Abu Dhabi chapter and is training employees from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in advanced technical and managerial skills. GE has set up a chapter of the Oil & Gas University in Qatar too.

GE Oil & Gas is partnering with its customers in the region to provide them with the solutions they need that extend beyond traditional maintenance and equipment. During the course of 2012, GE Oil & Gas has delivered nearly 34,000 man hours of training for customers in the Middle East alone. GE Oil & Gas technical courses allow customers to take advantage of OEM (original equipment manufacturing) expertise in order to provide them with the skills they need to operate and maintain GE?s equipment. Technical courses are delivered by experts with years of experience in the design and operation of rotating equipment.

GE Oil & Gas has been active in the Middle East for more than 30 years, employing more than 800 people at 10 locations.

Bipartisan immigration reform back on the table

Two high-profile Senators from across party lines are re-starting talk of immigration reform. Senators Charles Schumer, a Democrat, and Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican, have a four-part plan that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

By Reuters / November 11, 2012

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., (I.), and Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, wait to speak at a news conference in 2011. On Sunday, Schumer announced the two will resume their effort to pass bipartisan immigration reform.

Two key US senators are restarting bipartisan talks on US immigration reform that will include a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the country, Senator Charles Schumer said on Sunday.

Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," the Democrat Schumer said he has spoken with Republican Senator?Lindsey Graham?and they have agreed to resume talks that broke off two years ago.

"And I think we have a darned good chance using this blueprint to get something done this year. The?Republican Party?has learned that being ... anti-immigrant doesn't work for them politically. And they know it," Schumer said.

President?Barack Obama, re-elected last week with overwhelming support from Hispanic voters, in 2010 called the proposal unveiled by Graham and Schumer a "promising framework" on immigration reform. But the plan never got off the ground.

Obama's support among Hispanics was about 66 percent in the election, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling data.

There are an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the?United States, most of them Hispanics.

The Graham and Schumer plan has four components: requiring high-tech, fraud-proof Social Security cards to ensure that illegal workers cannot get jobs; strengthening border security and enforcement of immigration laws; creating a process for admitting temporary workers; and implementing a path to legal status for immigrants already in the country.

Schumer said the plan embraces "a path to citizenship that's fair, which says you have to learn English, you have to go to the back of the line, you've got to have a job, and you can't commit crimes."

iPad burglary victim unravels theft, meth operation

15 hrs.

A Seattle resident ?recently burgled and hoping to recover his iPad ? inadvertently?caused the downfall of what the police called a "major stolen property trafficking operation."

The Seattleite, only identified as "victim" in the?police report, discovered on Nov. 2 that his iPad had been stolen in a burglary at his place of work. After calling the Seattle Police Department and meeting up with officers, he activated his Find My iPad app.

The app led them to a house on 12th Avenue known to neighbors (including this reporter) for its prominent neon signage and occasional use as a computer repair shop, among other things. When the occupant opened the door, the iPad's owner activated the app's feature that causes the device to emit a noise; tellingly, the sound?emanated from within the house.

The person at the door said that they'd purchased the iPad on Craigslist, but as is often the case with such transactions, he couldn't provide any details. Usually that would be the end of the story, with the iPad being returned to its rightful owner, and the other guy left?trying to figure out?a way to reclaim his money.

But the?officers, already familiar with this "repair shop," had an ace up their sleeve.

Several months previously, another local (also anonymous but going by the name?Niemcziek on a community blog)?was the victim of a burglary, losing a pair of bikes valued at over $10,000. One turned up in Baltimore, where the buyer, suspicious of the bike's provenance, tracked down its real owner and alerted him to the eBay account that had sold it.

Niemcziek recognized a bike and laptop that had been stolen from?a friend for sale on the account. He contacted the police, who added his information to a growing mound of evidence surrounding the 12th Avenue house. All that was wanting was for the operation to be caught in the act. And a stolen iPad raising a racket inside the house was just that.

The SPD arrested the occupant who answered the door and acquired a warrant to search the house. Inside, in addition to the junk neighbors noted was always filling the place, they found stolen high-end bikes, laptops and expensive watches, and contraband including methamphetamines.

As of this writing, the investigation is ongoing; boxes and boxes of evidence were taken from the house, and as the police report puts it, "quite a number of items from recent area burglaries" were found within.

No charges have been filed yet against the occupant of the house, who was released shortly after his arrest.?

The garage, left, is still sealed with "police line" tape, but there have been no further developments in the case this week, a Seattle Police Department representative told NBC News.
